I must suggest that this is not a waste of time By 221bwhite Michael Kendrick has written one of the few books, whose outline has been just as helpful to me as the actual content. Your Blueprint for Life promises to help you and I align our "passion, gifts, and calling with eternity in mind," and that's admirable. Kendrick builds a rather strong foundation in the opening chapters for creating a blueprint, but I didn't find much unique or new until later in the book. Now, I believe Os Guinness has written the definitive book on calling and so my bias may be part of the problem. The strength of Kendrick's book, for me anyway, is not in establishing what he calls 'stepping stones' or any other practical aspect of your calling, but the fact that he encourages us all to have five strategies or plans in the following areas: financial, career, physical, spiritual, and relational.I was immediately reminded of the rule of 5 from John Maxwell and so I found the outline rather helpful in potentially integrating a plan for each area with Maxwell's suggestion to practice 5 things every day. Most people I know may have a financial plan or a physical plan (health and fitness), but few keep to a relational or career plan. For the latter, Jon Acuff's new book "Do Over" is outstanding.Kendrick's style is practical and is at times basic. It's solid material, just not really a unique blueprint. And for this reason, I must suggest that this is not a waste of time, but feels rather insufficient without going a bit deeper in to each strategy area. For example, because we are prone to list making, we'll be content to do the pithy devotional for our spiritual strategy, but I think the need is to go deeper in to five areas, not broader. And for that reason, your five plans may be different that Kendrick outlines. Nevertheless, thinking through the five categories is a worthy exercise.Perhaps the greatest strength of the book is not in creating a blueprint, but in receiving permission to live a more planned out life. A life with a bit more intention to it. A life that has been given some proactive thought and not simply a reactive posture. After all, blueprints are only good for building something, otherwise, they're simply sketches of what might have been. So, build something and if this book helps---great.(Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookLook Bloggers book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own)

Amazing read By Sally The Blueprint for Life; How to align your passions, gifts, and calling with eternity in mind by Michael Kendrick is a book to help the reader exam their lives and find the passions and talents in the lives and them apply them to their daily lives and ministry. So many people assume the use of their talents in ministry is limited to pastors, choir directors, and other people who work for the church. How could a businessman, a scientist, a garbage man use their job as a ministry? The author does an amazing job walking the reader through the book, searching their lives to find out what they are passionate for and then applying that passion for Christ.Michael Kendrick is a successful businessman who loves stock markets, number crunching, and making a deal. After retiring at an early age and getting bored really fast he realized that God had made him unique with these passions and talents and they he could apply them to his Christian walk. He went back to business and started applying these gifts to helping people and showing Jesus in everything that they do.I think before reading this book I was on the cusp of this idea. I am a scientist and I love showing people how amazing God is for creating science. I see my husband use is passion and gift of carpentry to help out so many people in our community and abroad. But these are special occasional things. How do we apply it to our every day? And that is where this book comes in.I really enjoyed this book. I found it hard to put down and every easy to read. I am excited to reread this book and pass it on to my friends and family. I hope that they all apply his applications to their lives as I am starting to do the same in mine.Note: I was given a copy of this book to read and review. The opinions above are my own and I was not compensated for a positive review.

Kendrick has a passion to help people live with purpose in light of eternity. If you feel unsatisfied with your life or incomplete, this book may just help you get moving in the direction of a fulfilled life.I like the way he has written this book. He covers a number of topics and gives the biblical foundation first before moving on to practical instruction. He lays a foundation of spirituality, knowing that we cannot have a fulfilled life without a relationship with God. He reminds us of the overall purpose in our life of glorifying God and knowing Christ. True joy comes from using our passions and gifts to glorify God, maximizing all that we have been given. He reminds us that God will reward us in heaven for how we steward our lives on earth. How we use our talents and gifts is important. Just like a blueprint is required for building a house, Kendrick suggests we develop a blueprint for life. That will help us identify what God had in mind when He designed us, allowing us to live with purpose. To develop that blueprint, Kendrick helps us identify our passions and gifts and then our calling. I was encouraged by his emphasizing each person's uniqueness. God's design of skills and talents means each of us has a unique calling to fulfill God's purposes. He asks many great questions to help us identify our passions, skills, and gifts. He continues by covering what he calls the big five areas of life: spiritual, relational, physical, financial, career. He makes sure that in each area we understand the spiritual principles underlying the area before he gives practical suggestions to maximize it.I really like the way Kendrick has developed this book. Some may think that they will just fall into their calling, that they won't have to create opportunities. I appreciate him reminding us that God might be preparing the way but we have to step out and pursue our calling. He shares his own story of changing professions to ultimately do what he feels God has designed for him. He draws on a number of sources, including stories and good teaching from other authors.I'm a picky reader but I really enjoyed this book. Kendrick gives a wonderful balance of biblical principles, practical suggestions, and enthusiastic encouragement. If you are looking to redirect your life in a more fulfilling direction, I recommend this book.Food for thought:“A life of value is defined by those things that will make a difference in eternity.”I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher for the purpose of an independent and honest review.
