Do you believe in ghosts? When doors and windows open on their own, when footsteps echo down an empty hall, when shadows move in the darkness and voices whisper when no one is around...what is going on? These are the experiences that stick with us, frighten us, incite our imaginations, and, ultimately, connect us to the past. Skeptics and believers alike are sure to be captivated by author David J. Schmidt's case study of Point Loma Nazarene University, a private Christian college in California that is filled with tales of poltergeists and apparitions. Originally built by a mysterious group of enigmatic Occultists known as the "Theosophists," the college is said to be haunted by the group's leader, Madame Tingley. Schmidt's retelling of these chilling stories both terrifies and lifts the shroud of mystery behind the hauntings as he compares them to other spectral stories from around the world. In coming to understand the ghosts of one college, the author hopes to broaden our understanding of hauntings as a worldwide phenomenon. You are invited to join him in his search...if you dare.

By Tom Painter It can be incredibly difficult to find books revolving around the somewhat precarious subject of 'ghosts' that can grab my attention. More often than not, even if you are a 'paranormal enthusiast' (which frankly, I wouldn't consider myself to be), most will have you rolling your eyes or slamming the text shut after the first few paragraphs explain how Joe Bloggs felt 'a bit funny' after walking past a cemetery one evening after a few pints at the local establishment.Holy Ghosts by David J. Schmidt caters to every reader. He doesn't ask the reader to suspend their disbelief, aware of the fact that not everyone will open the book already believing in paranormal abnormalities. Yet, his tone is also respectful to audiences who may already believe in another realm, and are looking to learn more about it. Schmidt caters to all audiences, and does so with ease, grace, and humility.Another triumph of this book is Schmidt's accomplishment of being able to reconcile the beliefs of both non-believing, and religious readers without alienating either party. Schmidt's research is profound, and he seems to have left no stone unturned in his extensive search of details and facts, and yet, at the end of it all he has not made a steadfast statement. He has the humility to present all of his collected facts without claiming to be in possession of them all. Cover to cover, a compelling and fascinating read. Needless to say, I recommend this book to everyone.

By cousinboobin In the world of men, there are show-ers, and there are growers. In the world of writers, there are show-ers, and there are tellers. I've seen David J. Schmidt naked, and as a man, I hope to God he's a grower. But I've also read this book, and as a writer, by-God he's a show-er!Here David J. Schmidt presents a modern-day "Odyssey" through the history of the Theosophists, with himself in the Odysseus role, stepping down from the mast on which he fought off the temptations of the Sirens' song that got the better of his fellow men. But BEHOLD--he steps into frame and dons Elton John glasses like Arnold in Terminator 3 while blasts a sweet-as-saccharin pop song by none other than Taylor Swift. David J. Schmidt has a blank space, baby, but he's writing your name in the snow! If it's scary stories you seek, this book has the goods to shrink your manhood like David J. Schmidt's. But if you're like me and it's intellectual manna you seek (and if for some reason the Entourage movie didn't slake your thirst), wait until the fourth part, where the author-turned-journalist faces the very people whose beliefs and ways of life he's been scoffing at and finds the heart in the maw of the beast we call Faith. You'll say, "God, this book has everything ... except a drawing of the Prophet Muhammad." But then--BAM!--page 284! So get this book. Read this book. And tell a friend about this book. It will open your eyes ... and you might just be too scared to close them at night.

Schmidt did his research and the leg work required to track down the true meanings behind the stories, rumors and superstitions revolving around the historical Point Loma property. He sees his initial hypothesis through to the end of the book where he discovers that more holy than ghosts are the real living, breathing people with all their fears, desires of the flesh, and pounding hearts and sweaty palms. In short, bodies matter, despite the contradictions found in our cultural belief system, influenced alike by both the early New Age movement in the Theosophists with their mind-over-matter mantras and the Evangelical movement within Christianity with its belief that this earth and our bodies here do not matter because believers will escape into a heaven in the sky. Holy Ghosts explores these issues from a unique local point of view and challenges the believer and non-believer alike.
