Reapers is about Judgment Day. Messengers (angels) will be released to harvest the Earth on a day selected long ago by the Creator, Yahuah. It will occur on a day when the Sun goes dark, and the moon becomes as blood. In thick darkness, the reapers will annihilate the unsealed, lawless people and burn them. Like weeds taken out from the midst of wheat (Mt. 3:12), they will be easily selected by their behavior. The ones remaining will be gathered for a wedding feast - as they are the wheat, obeying the Commandments of Yahuah. How will the messengers discern who are the obedient ones? The obedient ones will be fasting, because the day of the reapers will occur on the Fast, the 10th day of the 7th moon. This book needs to be read by every pastor, seminary student, and pew-sitter - it may help them finally understand. The Day of Yahuah comes, burning like a furnace. It will be so fierce it could change your religion - but it's best to prepare for it in advance. This book will equip a person to do that.

Soron is the son of the self proclaimed King of the North (I'll admit I was a little nervous at his title after reading another very well know fantasy series that was made into a show that also had a King of the North. I'm happy to say there wasn't really any other similarity. During the course of the story, we follow Soron in his adventures. From fighting a Yeti, to battling a foreign warlord, to battling cut throats and rapists. I like Soron's character and Robyn's world building and story telling. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good light fantasy. I was in the mood for something that wasn't too heavy, and this did the trick. And don't get hung up on the recommended age range! I'm way over that, and I have to say I'm hooked. As soon as I finish this review, I am off to download the next book!

I selfishly want to hear more of his story. I admit I was left hanging regarding the mine he found when he battled the Yeti. When he went out to meet the invading king, the fight was magical but without arrogant flair. Soron humbly accepted the quest in an attempt to save his people, not to claim fame.Later, in Venicia, he quickly builds a reputation that he does not arrogantly flaunt. The story paints a detailed background without wasting time on irrelevant details. Mr. Wideman draws readers in close and does not let them go until he is finished with them. Unfortunately for me, the next book in the Stoneblood Saga has yet to be released. I will have to get the rest of his books ASAPHurry with the rest of Nathan's story (or more of it, at least, if this is not the conclusionTHANK YOU

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. In Christ-A New Creature By Joseph J.Adrian In the lead article of this FGB on Conversion, the powerful and greatly useful Baptist Preacher of the 19th century C.H.Spurgeon,preaching on 2Corinthians5:17 '....If any man be in Christ,he is a new creature ...',gives us some of the signs that conversion has taken place in an individual-He asserts that conversion has a radical effect on the whole man.-"It changes the principle upon which he lives;he lived for self, now he lives for God." Some have, throughout, the history of Christianity, tried at times to negate completely or minimize the transformation that takes place when a person is converted. Both the Scriptures and our Lord's faithful servants have been exceedingly clear about the great change which is effected by God's transforming power, when a person is brought out of 'The Kingdom Of Darkness' into 'God's Marvelous Light'.There is an emphasis by some,in our generation,on 'The Supposed Physical Miracles',that are taking place, but Spurgeon boldly and correctly insists -"The spiritual miracle is greater than the physical one." That is why regeneration and its result conversion, are such powerful demonstrations of God's power, because someone who was dead spiritually,is brought to life,by God's Sovereign Power, and the change which takes place can be seen, undeniably,in the life of such a person.John Gill in the article 'The Meaning,Causes and Subjects of Conversion'.taken from his 'Body Of Practical And Doctrinal Divinity',distinguishes Regeneration from Conversion in this respect-Regeneration is something that God does, the person that is regenerated is completely passive, but in conversion(which is the result of being regenerated)both God and man are active.God's converting grace enables men to turn from sin to God,but the person actually does 'The Turning' .Its similar to faith, which is the gift of God,but God does not believe for the sinner, the one who comes to Christ believes on him.In conversion Gill teaches that there is a turning which takes place-1.The turn of the heart to God.-The heart is previously set upon the things of this world and the affections are now turned Godward.2.A man is turned from darkness to light.3.Men turn from their own righteousness to the righteousness of Christ.-Self righteousness is the religion of the unsaved man(no matter what religion they profess to believe). Not so with the religion of 'The Bible',Christ's sheep trust in his righteousness and abhor their own. This Free Grace Broadcaster Issue #195 Conversion also contains articles from these godly men-William S.Plumer,J.C.Ryle,A.W.Pink,and D.Martyn Lloyd Jones. It is an excellent publication for introducing people to valued writings from the past.

Athenagoras (c. 133 – c. 190 AD) was a Father of the Church, an Ante-Nicene Christian apologist who lived during the second half of the 2nd century of whom little is known for certain, besides that he was Athenian (though possibly not originally from Athens), a philosopher, and a convert to Christianity. In his writings he styles himself as "Athenagoras, the Athenian, Philosopher, and Christian". There is some evidence that he was a Platonist before his conversion, but this is not certain. Although his work appears to have been well-known and influential, mention of him by other early Christian apologists, notably in the extensive writings of Eusebius, is strangely absent. It may be that his treatises, circulating anonymously, were for a time considered as the work of another apologist, or there may have been other circumstances now lost. There are only two mentions of him in early Christian literature: several accredited quotations from his Apology in a fragment of Methodius of Olympus (died 312) and some untrustworthy biographical details in the fragments of the Christian History of Philip of Side (c. 425). Philip of Side claims that Athenagoras headed the Catechetical School of Alexandria (which is probably incorrect) and notes that Athenagoras converted to Christianity after initially familiarizing himself with the Scriptures in an attempt to controvert them. His writings bear witness to his erudition and culture, his power as a philosopher and rhetorician, his keen appreciation of the intellectual temper of his age, and his tact and delicacy in dealing with the powerful opponents of his religion. Thus his writings are credited by some later scholars as having had a more significant impact on their intended audience than the now better-known writings of his more polemical and religiously-grounded contemporaries.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Athenagoras: Early Christian Philosopher and Apologist By Johannes Platonicus Athenagoras the Athenian (ca. 2nd century) belongs to that momentous epoch in history, when philosophers were becoming Christians and Christians were becoming philosophers. Like his senior contemporary St Justin, Athenagoras continued to wear the philosopher's garb while professing the universal faith. Now, so little is known of Athenagoras that we know more about his writings than we do about his life. Fortunately, history was kind enough to hand us down a tandem of Athenagoras' treatises: one on the Resurrection of the Dead and another, this present work, entitled a Plea for the Christians. This treatise is addressed to the great Marcus Aurelius and his pretentious son, Commodus. The date of composition is surmised to have been conducted around 176-177 AD. The Plea for the Christians, then, is an apology which initially pleads the case for Christians against the injustices and inequalities they were suffering under Roman administration (Plea, ch. 1). And secondly, Athenagoras answers to the outrageous charges hurled upon them by the "undiscerning rumor of the multitude (ch. 2)," these being (1.) atheism, (2.) cannibalism (3.) and incest. Athenagoras first explains that the injustices brought upon the Christians are exacted on account of the mere name of "Christian." And the perpetrators of these injustices do not, he adds, just confiscate property, "they plot against our very bodies and souls, pouring upon us wholesale charges of crimes in which we are guiltless even in thought (ch. 1)." His argument, therefore, is that Christians should not be persecuted with regard to their name. People are to be judged for what they do; names, in themselves, are not worthy of hatred or punishment. Athenagoras, also speaks of religious inequalities Christians were enduring in a state that--he reminds the emperors--is grounded upon the principle of religious toleration. Individuals are granted the freedom to worship any god he wishes; the same is applied to cities. So why are Christian's, who worship the one God, excluded from this right? This exclusion from religious rights is an inherent contradiction to Roman law. Next, Athenagoras answers to the charge of atheism [=denial of the gods]. His argument here is that if Christians are to be held guilty of atheism, then many of the philosophers and poets should be too, since they have maintained the belief in one God. Athenagoras then infers that polytheism is the true atheism, since God is one and cannot be divided into parts. The idea that the gods are elements or bodies in the universe is absurd because they are mutable and corruptible and God is unchangeable and incorruptible. The notion that the gods are emanations from the one God is also absurd, because God is indivisible, being of one essence. Then the author moves on to answer the charge of incest. Athenagoras remarks that incest is essentially against Christian moral teaching and is completely inadmissible to the ascetic life. But, he says, incest has been a common practice among some polytheistic cultures, even among some of the accusers of Christians (ch. 34). Finally, Athenagoras refutes the claim that Christians are cannibals--a misunderstanding of the reception of the Eucharist. His response is that Christians are much more humane than pagans, since they condemn abortion, infanticide and refrain from attending or condoning the blood-lettings of the gladiatorial games. All in all, this is a very good early Christian apologetic work and is asked to be read with those of St Justin and his pupil Tatian the Assyrian. In addition to the polemical material, there is also theological subject matter, of which some of the seminal concepts of the Trinity are found. Later theologians owe much to Athenagoras in the development of their Trinitarian theologies and Christologies.

“Explodes into a wild fantasy adventure. . . . Cody has begun what promises to be an epic trilogy.” —Adam Gidwitz, New York Times bestselling author of A Tale Dark and Grimm   It is said that in the thirteenth century, in a town called Hamelin, a piper lured all of the children away with his magical flute, and none of them were ever seen again.   Today, tough, pink-haired Max and her little brother, Carter, are stuck in modern-day Hamelin with their father . . . until they are also led away by the Piper to a place called the Summer Isle. There they meet the original stolen children, who haven’t aged a day and who have formed their own town, vigilantly guarded from the many nightmarish beings that roam the land.   No one knows why the Piper stole them, but Max and Carter may be the key to returning the lost children of Hamelin. Together they set out on the Peddler’s Road to find their way back to the real world.   This swashbuckling journey is perfect for fans of Rump and A Tale Dark and Grimm. Don’t miss the second adventure in the series, The Magician’s Key!

The Secrets of the Pied Piper 1: The Peddler's Road, by Matthew Cody

From School Library Journal Gr 4–7—Max and Carter reluctantly join their folklorist father on sabbatical in Hamelin. Yes, that Hamelin. So savvy readers won't express too much surprise when a flood of rats descends from the kitchen vent and the mysterious exterminator who comes to fix the rodent problem actually lures the pair to a fantastical land called the Summer Isle. There, Max and Carter discover a walled village built by the 130 children led away in the familiar Pied Piper tale, a group desperately working to defend themselves against an array of nefarious magical beings who populate the rest of the Isle. In Will in Scarlet (Knopf, 2013), Cody reimagined the Robin Hood legend with verve and charm, focusing on a young protagonist. In this first book of a projected trilogy, Cody attempts a similar feat on a more ambitious scale, meshing contemporary and historical characters as well as folkloric creatures from multiple European traditions. An endearing, resourceful team—the siblings plus three medieval Hameliners—undertake a treacherous journey across the Isle, during which Cody ably delineates each character's personality to yield distinct perspectives on their quandary. In a loving yet complicated sibling dynamic, older sister Max struggles to concede responsibility for her goofier brother, who handles his physical disability with stubborn aplomb. Juggling a squad of children, a Piper-opposing wizard (the titular Peddler), and a prophetic map, Cody's saga furnishes much pleasing kerfuffle but sometimes feels frustratingly diffuse. The ending sets up an obvious path for book two, and while many elements of this book augur rip-roaring sequels, readers may wish that the first had provided more narrative focus and a firmer resolution. VERDICT This opener assembles a promising collection of characters and fairy tale elements but leaves the motley components scattered a smidgen too wide.—Robbin E. Friedman, Chappaqua Library, NY

Review "Shifting among various characters' perspectives, this engaging story introduces a world filled with human-size rats, magicians, kobolds, elves, ghosts, and more. Cody weaves an inventive fantasy that spans time and space in its exploration of the lighter and darker sides of magic."  - Publisher's Weekly

We know that the Piped Piper lured the children of Hamelin from their beds, and led them away. We know that they were never seen again, but we don’t know what happened to the children. In a new middle grade novel, author Matthew Cody explores this premise in The Secrets of the Pied Piper: The Peddler’s Road.Max (short for Maxine) and Carter are two children living in the modern era. They are staying in Hamelin with their father, a folklorist. By the time they realize they are caught up in the Pied Piper story, they are whisked away and taken to the Summer Isle. The original children of Hamelin have made their home on the Summer Isle. They are aware that they have been there for a long time, but they have no idea that they have been living there for 800 years. Their bodies have not aged, but they have lost their memories of their homes and their families. They tell Carter and Max that life on the Summer Isle is not always idyllic, and that terrifying creatures come out at night, like the giant rats. They also tell Max and Carter that they believe that their arrival signals fulfillment of an ancient prophecy. The two modern children must set aside everything they have been told about magic not existing, and join their new friends on a quest to the other side of the Summer Isle. The journey is long and dangerous, but if Max and Carter ever want to get home, they need to search for the secrets of the island and its most famous resident.Over the course of the story, Max and Carter must both search evaluate what they want from life. Max is brash and abrasive, and needs to learn to work with the other children. Carter wears a brace on his leg, and has always been more of an observer. But on the Summer Isle, the other children value his opinion. He has an opportunity to take on more of a leadership role, but he needs to believe in himself. In addition to a village of ageless children, Cody has filled the island with all sorts of magical creatures. From the mischief of rats (the proper name for a group of rats) enmeshed in a power struggle, to the house on chicken legs owned by a witch, the island is teeming with magic. The children of New Hamelin (as they have named their village) have held heir own for hundreds of years, but can they withstand this latest onslaught?I would recommend The Peddler’s Road. This is the first installment of a planned trilogy called The Secrets of the Pied Piper. I knew this, but I was still a little surprised when the story ended so suddenly. Talk about a cliffhanger! This is a fun and original adventure story. There is plenty of excitement and some scariness, which makes this ideal middle grade fare. I am certainly excited for the next book in the series, and I suppose I will have to content myself with reading Matthew Cody’s other books in the meantime.I received a copy of this book in exchange for a fair/honest review.

Good Read – suspenseful but not too scary for young readers By TooManyHobbies Matthew Cody’s retelling of the classic Pied Piper story is imaginative and unique. The story focuses on 1) what happen to the children of Hamelin after they disappeared with the Pied Piper, and 2) how a modern day boy is the key to the Hamelin children returning home after their 700 hundred year absence. The story had a good pace, and there was enough suspense and tension without getting too frightening for younger readers. The main characters where all likable, and the sibling angst between Max and Carter is true-to-life. During the story the children encounter lots of obstacles and challenges which help engage the reader and keep the story moving forward. There are giant rats, ghost, trolls, witches, magicians, and elves. There is plenty to keep a young reader engaged, but there are some plot elements that had me puzzled. Some of the sub-plots were also confusing (Shades’ Harbor), and I never understood why the group took the long and winding Peddler’s Road (which made them circle the island going first south then east then back north when there was a much shorter and more direct northern route to the Black Castle).I also found the ending of the story to be rushed, and there wasn’t nearly enough closure for my taste. The ending is not quite a cliff-hanger, but it is pretty darn close. But on the plus side the ending/epilogue does do a good job of setting up the next book in the series. It has a great hook that has me looking forward to the next book in the trilogy. So a good story that is well written, but keep in mind that at the end of Book 1 you will have just as many questions as when you started.

By Emory Daniels Literature tells us that in the 13th century a piper in the village of Hamelin lured all the children away with his flute and they were never to be seen or heard from again.“The Secrets of the Pied Piper I: The Peddlers Road” by Matthew Cody is the first in a Triology to examine this 13th century myth – not through the research and historical evidence but through the magic and mental imagery of fiction. In this wonderful book Max and little brother Carter are living with their father in modern-day Hamelin and are taken away by a Piper to Summer Isle where they discover the original stolen children who mysteriously haven’t aged a day since their disappearance. Max and Carter want to return home to their father but they also would like to find a way to so all the stolen children can return to their 13th century homes. Is this even possible? That is a nice story line – a story best told in one volume rather than in three. The original Pied Piper story was told in one book and so I see no reason to tell the story of their return home in three books instead, except that publishers get three times as much revenue. This book is 368 pages which should be enough to introduce and complete the story plot. But I don’t think its profit motivating Cody who is a pretty straight-forward guy as well as a solid children’s writer. After earning a graduate degree where he focused on Shakespeare, Cody moved to New York and spent several years working in theaters. He became an English teacher in 2004 and began writing his first novel. He is now married, has a son, and is still writing in New York. Maybe because the novel is his main genre is whyCody tells his story in a Triology instead of one children’s book which he might have found too limiting.Anyhow it is a fun story and if you kids like it enough that they will read the next two then I am totally wrong and congratulate Cody and his publishers for their literary acumen.

His life is a glowing testimony of God's unfailing love, amazing grace, and incomparable ability to transform an ordinary boy into a significant man. The Vedic culture is accepted by numerous scholars as one of the most sophisticated civilizations to appear after the last glacial period of 12,000 years ago. It developed in ancient India, and as the people populated the region, they also expanded and spread into other parts of the planet, taking much of their culture with them. This book takes us on a journey through history and across many countries as we point out similarities and remnants of the Vedic tradition that remain there to this day. These include forms of art, philosophy, religion, architecture, temples, ways of living, and so on. Such countries include: Nepal, Burma, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Africa, the Middle East, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Central Asia, Greece, Italy, Germany, Russia, Ireland, Scandinavia, the Americas, and more. This book also explains: * How many religions in the world have features that clearly descended from the oldest form of spiritual knowledge and truth as found in Vedic Dharma. * How Vedic Dharma is still relevant today and can help establish peace through its timeless spiritual wisdom. * It also helps unravel and reveal the true nature of the Vedic civilization, and how and why it infiltrated and contributed to so many areas and cultures of the world. * It also shows a mysterious side of history that few others have recognized. This book will help anyone understand how the advanced nature of the Vedic civilization and its universal spiritual principles fit into the development of so many other cultures and still contributes to the upliftment of society today. This book is the follow-up of a previous volume called "Proof of Vedic Culture’s Global Existence," but with completely different information and resources, as well as updates, written in a more academic style, using hundreds of references, quotes and notes to verify all the information that is used.

Stephen my son you have rendered yeoman service to Sanatan Dharma and the Vedic World . From 1966 my guru Purushottam Nagesh Oak wrote about Taj Mahal being an erstwhile Rajput Palace and how Vedic culture shines through the layers of civilization. I see how Stephen has been inspired by his work. In particular Stephen has put on the internet all the photographs of how the Taj Mahal has seven storeys, sealed areas, hidden chambers etc etc and he has brilliantly followed in the footsteps of Oak jee and his mind blowing work " Word Vedic Heritage. God bless you Stephen. But wait there is more. He details how the Mayan constructions like Macchu Picchu are fundamentally Vedic structures relying on the ancient Vedic Text of Architecture or our Shilpa Shastra.. and further he details how Chitzen Itsa is laid out in the Vedic Feng Shui or Vastu principles.. so you have three Modern Wonders of the World Taj Mahal, Macchu Picchu and Chitzen Itsa all Vedic structures.. From School Library Journal Gr 10 Up—McKenna Berney and her BFF Courtney made a pact to defer college for a year to hike the Appalachian Trail from Maine to Georgia. When Courtney bails on her, McKenna is determined to face the challenge alone. With miles of practice hikes under her belt, and top-notch gear, the protagonist sets off on her journey. While on the trail, McKenna meets Sam, who is a high school dropout and on the run from his abusive father. Their friendship quickly evolves into romance. Their journey on the trail is rigorous, with miles of choppy terrain and limited supplies until they reach a local town along the route. When Sam has the idea to go off the trail, something rule-following McKenna would never consider, she gives in, thinking it will be an adventure. That decision puts their love and survival skills to the test. Gessner's debut novel speaks volumes about what it means to truly survive in the wilderness, both alone and with the one you love. Situations including wild animal confrontations, starvation, dehydration, and near death are addressed with authenticity. The panic and fear that set in when they lose their way will strike a nerve with hikers and nonhikers alike. Gessner handles dishonesty (McKenna's parents think that Courtney is with her), first sexual experience, and survival with the utmost sensitivity, shedding light on the range of human emotions. VERDICT A great add to YA collections, especially for those with a taste for the outdoors.—Erin Holt, Williamson County Public Library, Franklin, TN

Review Praise for The Distance from Me to You"A wilderness adventure dashed with romance and danger . . . readers should find it easy to relate to McKenna’s desire to take risks, prove her independence, and finish the trail at all costs."--Publishers Weekly "Gessner writes vividly of the trail and hiking . . . She brings McKenna and Sam to life as well-rounded characters, gradually building their relationship to a satisfying and realistic level. The star of the show here, however, is the Appalachian Trail and the adventures the teens experience on it.Good romance, great wilderness."--Kirkus Reviews"Readers will enjoy the compelling, well-paced depiction of the adventure and lore of the AT, and they will be glad to find such a tough-minded, capable heroine in a realistic novel."--BCCB" A great add to YA collections, especially for those with a taste for the outdoors."--SLJ"[Gessner] has created a romance and adventure tale in one."--VOYA"This story combines adventure and romance in a great read, especially for anyone with an interest in hiking. By Book Addict The Distance from Me to You, by Marina Gessner, is the story of McKenna, a girl who decides to put off college for a year so she can hike the Appalachian Trail. Having grown up hearing her father's stories about how hiking changed his life, she decides this is a challenge she has to prove to herself she can accomplish. But when her best friend Courtney backs out to stay with her boyfriend, McKenna decides to take the long, dangerous trip by herself.I picked this book up because I love survival stories, especially ones about long hikes, having read Wild and A Walk in the Woods years ago. After reading this one, I have to say it really exceeded my expectations, especially for a YA survival story. I absolutely loved it! Too much contemporary YA centers around romance, or female characters giving things up for boyfriends. This one is just the opposite. Although there is a love story, it takes a back page to the story of McKenna finding herself, and her own convictions. The one time she veers from her own judgement to his, disaster strikes and she learns another valuable lesson. There are very strong feminist themes here, as well as coming of age, and the overall message is a very positive one for young girls: trust yourself. The characters in this book were amazing too. Given the solitary nature of the hike, they are few and far between, but I loved McKenna dearly. She was tough and strong, a perfect YA heroine. I didn't really like Sam at all, but his character was realistic and believable. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but I was glad for how things ended up. I think it really strengthened the novel, particularly given his role in everything that happens. So overall, I give this book a solid 5/5 stars, highly recommended. It was perfectly paced and had me on the edge of my seat, eager to find out how it would all end up. This book really made me want to get outdoors, appreciate life more, take risks, do some hiking, read Walden…. and really, there is nothing better than a book that inspires you to do more. I'm still thinking about it a few days after finishing!! I can't believe it doesn't have more reviews on here…please, go and pick this one up!

By Brittany I don’t know if I’d go as far as saying I’m a nature girl but I’m definitely a camping girl! I used to go all the time with my family and now my husband and I go camping several times a year, always enjoying backwoods/primitive camping. When I heard about THE DISTANCE FROM ME TO YOU and how it took place on the Appalachian Trail, I knew I had to pick it up! Thanks to Penguin Teen, I obtained a review copy and immediately tore in!THE DISTANCE FROM ME TO YOU was a really interesting book and it really made me think back on what kind of person I was at McKenna’s age. I definitely didn’t have the determination to do something like make a full hike from Maine to Georgia on the Appalachian Trail and I really didn’t have her drive. (I also wonder if I even have that drive as an adult.) It was so great to see McKenna’s determination to achieve her goals and I really admired how much it meant to her! That being said, I also think it’s kind of crazy to allow two seventeen-year-old girls to make that trip much less witnessing McKenna doing it by herself… Though I guess that was a serious point the book was making! Many people along the trail wrote McKenna off as too young or because she was a girl hiking the trail alone and immediately assumed she needed help or couldn’t do it on her own. It was a really interesting thing to think about. If that was my kid, there’s no way I would allow them to go on that trip at seventeen — with or without a friend, male or female. I remember how I was at seventeen and I don’t think I was immature but I think that’s a really, really big thing for a teenager to take on. Like, I don’t know if I’d be ready for that now. We go camping and it’s a pretty big deal to make sure we make the proper preparations for possibly injuries, encounters with animals, and having enough food and drink. Having some of that knowledge already made it hard at times to see McKenna flounder or flub when it came to some camping and/or survival basics. Then again, she’s also pretty much staying on a trail and not venturing off into the woods so chances are that she wouldn’t run into too many actual survival situations.Aside from experience in the wilderness, the book also addressed McKenna taking this trip as a young female on her own. I am all for girl power and McKenna taking this trip head on by herself and I loved how empowering it was too… But I wouldn’t want anyone to go on this trip alone. That’s a very long way and a very long time to be away from home if something happens — whether that’s animal or human encounter — and you open yourself up to those dangers by where you are and what you’re doing, it’s incredibly important to have someone by your side (and again, male or female, I don’t care. It’s always best to do things like this with a buddy, especially if you don’t have that experience yet). It just really made me put myself in that situation and wonder how I would do and what I might encounter. It was a great experience to put myself in McKenna’s shoes! The book was in third person but focused strongly on McKenna for a few chapters until Sam’s POV popped into the book about 50 pages in! I was surprised and a little thrown to have a new focus but also excited because sometimes multiple POVs really bring something special to a book. I was really glad to have gotten to know Sam throughout the book from his perspective and I think that really helped me connect to him as a character! The book overall was a good read for me but never quite hit amazing like I had hoped. The first quarter of the book felt like a lot of telling. There were a lot of details about McKenna on the trail but nothing was quite happening yet. Things started to pick up once Sam came onto the scene and then there was more of a dialogue going instead of just McKenna’s actions and thoughts. I felt like the book had a steady pace from then on and really started to take off after the first hundred pages. It took a while for me to warm up to it but I really enjoyed the second half and the ending quite a bit!I was very on and off with the romance. I was really excited for McKenna and Sam to meet and I really enjoyed watching them get to know each other. Being two people hiking the trail solo, the ended up spending a lot of time together once they joined up but it also felt a bit awkward how quickly things escalated. I suppose being out there on your own and only having one other person as a constant companion really can do that for you but as much as I love camping and hiking, it’s not very sexy as you’re living it so it didn’t feel like a sexy situation when things started to heat up.I really, really enjoyed how the book ended and it really pulled everything together for me. I wasn’t sure how everything was going to conclude (after a very suspenseful few chapters, I might add!) and how these two people from very different places would stay together… or drift apart. I was trying to think of a happy ending that allowed both characters to pursue their dreams, continue on with life, and not separate at the end of this journey, leaving me (and probably other readers) on a sad note. I won’t reveal how it wraps up but I really thought Marina Gessner did a great job tying it all together! I was very impressed.THE DISTANCE FROM ME TO YOU didn’t quite pan out like I had expected but it was good read overall! Some things didn’t quite live up to what I was hoping and others exceeded my expectations to even out to an overall good book. I think a problem I have with books taking place in the wilderness/camping is a personal issue — it’s more fun for me to live it than read it! — so as much as I love it, maybe it’s not a subject I should continue to seek out in my reading. I hope readers enjoy McKenna’s journey as much as I did! I thought it was well-done and it really made me reflect on my own experiences all throughout the book.

Branfield The Distance from Me to You by Marina Gessner is an exhilarating journey of self-discovery for lead protagonist McKenna Berney. A six month hike on the Appalachian Trial for the recent high school grad leads to romance but it is what she learns about herself that makes the novel such a wonderful read.Having grown up hearing her father’s stories about hiking the Pacific Northwest Trial, McKenna is determined to undergo a similar hike before beginning college. She and her close friend Courtney have been planning their trip for the past year, but at the last minute, Courtney backs out after reuniting with her boyfriend. Undeterred and determined to go through with the 2000 mile hike, McKenna keeps the change in plans from her parents and strikes out on her own.McKenna is pretty mature for her age and she has extensively researched her upcoming hike and she has carefully planned her daily hikes and stops. However, her trip is off to a bit of rocky beginning after she overestimates her abilities and underestimates the initial segment of the rugged terrain. Quickly regrouping, she soon hits her stride and she basks in the solitude and splendor of the trail. McKenna also seizes the opportunity to unplug from modern technology and greatly limits her use of the cell phone she brought along for safety’s sake. Despite her ability to take care of herself, McKenna is a little naive and in spite of her forethought and preparations, she is unable to plan for every contingency which leads to some ill-thought out decisions along the way.On the trail, McKenna crosses paths with Sam Tilghman, a runaway who is hiking the trail after running away from his abusive father. He successfully hikes to his brother’s house in Maine, but upon discovering his brother is following in their father’s footsteps, Sam decides to hit the trail again. He and McKenna hike independently for part of the trip but eventually a romance begins after they decide to become travel partners. Their different strengths help compensate for their individual weaknesses but trouble ensues when McKenna allows him to talk her into going off trail. The Distance from Me to You is a marvelous adventure and Marina Gessner brings the Appalachian Trial vibrantly to life. The romance between McKenna and Sam is very sweet but it is the valuable lessons they each learn that makes the novel such a worthwhile read. McKenna learns the hard way to trust her instincts and she emerges from the journey with the strength and self-confidence to make some tough decisions about her future. All in all, a very compelling and fascinating contemporary young adult novel that readers of all ages will enjoy.I received a complimentary copy for review.

If, as Buddhism claims, the potential for awakening exists in all human beings, we should be able to map the phenomenon with the same science we apply to other forms of consciousness. A student of cognitive social science and a Zen practitioner for more than forty years, Richard P. Boyle brings his sophisticated perspective to bear on the development of a theoretical model for both ordinary and awakened consciousness.

Boyle conducts probing interviews with eleven prominent Western Buddhist teachers (Shinzen Young, John Tarrant, Ken McLeod, Ajahn Amaro, Martine Batchelor, Shaila Catherine, Gil Fronsdal, Stephen Batchelor, Pat Enkyo O'Hara, Bernie Glassman, and Joseph Goldstein) and one scientist (James Austin) who have experienced awakening. From the paths they traveled to enlightenment and their descriptions of the experience, he derives three fundamental properties of awakened consciousness. He then constructs an overarching model that explains how Buddhist practices help free the mind from attachments to reality and the self and make possible the three properties of awakening. Specifically, these teachers describe how they worked to control attention and quiet the mind, detach from ideas and habits, and open themselves to compassion. Boyle's account incorporates current theories of consciousness, sociological insights, and research in neuroscience to advance the study of awakened consciousness and help an even greater number of people to realize it.

Realizing Awakened Consciousness: Interviews with Buddhist Teachers and a New Perspective on the Mind, by Richard P. Boyle

Review

If Buddhism is to realize its liberative potential in the modern world, we need to learn a lot more about the nature of awakening. This book is an important step in that direction. Boyle's interviews with well-known Western teachers are insightful (sometimes fascinating) in themselves, and the conclusions that he draws from them are a significant contribution to our understanding of contemplative traditions.

(David Loy, author of A New Buddhist Path: Enlightenment, Evolution, and Ethics in the Modern World)

'Awakening,' as described and practiced in Buddhism, Boyle shows, is a process that is real and can be appraised in scientific terms.

(Anthony Giddens, London School of Economics)

When meditators have an 'awakening,' what is it really like? Richard P. Boyle interviewed eleven Western Buddhist teachers to find out, and we get to read their accounts in their own words. Then, drawing on these interviews and on scientific research, Boyle offers an innovative view of how awakening happens and how it can transform each of us.

(Paula England, New York University, and president, American Sociological Association)

In addition to the interviews with well-known American Buddhist teachers, which form the heart of this book and make fascinating reading in themselves, Boyle develops a provocative frame of reference for understanding and discussing philosophically the meaning of some common features he identifies in the interviews, regarding the form of consciousness generally referred as 'awakening.'

(David Preston, San Diego State University, author of Constructing Trans-Cultural Reality: The Social Organization of Zen Practice)

More than any book I have read, it left me optimistic that awakened consciousness is not some myth but an attainable human potential.

(PsycCritiques)

About the Author Richard P. Boyle was an associate professor of sociology at the University of California, Los Angeles, until 1972, when he left to pursue his studies in Buddhism in the mountains of northern New Mexico. Some years later, he moved to Albuquerque and worked as a senior research scientist at the University of New Mexico's Institute for Social Research. He is currently continuing the research reported in this book and extending the theoretical model.

By Bev Magennis The interviews in this book are so honest, and told in the most conversational, straightforward manner, I could not put the book down. The teachers' commitments to observing and disciplining the mind in order to achieve expanded states of awareness involves a lifetime of study and devotion. Each one has achieved insight and humility through decades of abandonment to their practices. The interviews opened my mind to the essence of meditation and the benefits of a lifetime of practice. Boyle's scientific analysis and summation, as well a his own meditation process, offer unique insight to the workings of the mind, as well as categorizing phenomena experienced in meditation. He makes a strong argument for quieting the mind in order to move forward as a society into a world free of stress. I am a non-Buddhist who found this book extremely well-written, fascinating and informative.

5 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A must have! By Greg You will not be disappointed. This book provides fantastic insights and I would recommended for anybody who is on the path of self-discovery and betterment.
