In Christ-A New Creature By Joseph J.Adrian In the lead article of this FGB on Conversion,the powerful and greatly useful Baptist Preacher of the 19th century C.H.Spurgeon,preaching on 2Corinthians5:17 '....If any man be in Christ,he is a new creature ...',gives us some of the signs that conversion has taken place in an individual-He asserts that conversion has a radical effect on the whole man.-"It changes the principle upon which he lives;he lived for self,now he lives for God." Some have,throughout,the history of Christianity,tried at times to negate completely or minimize the transformation that takes place when a person is converted.Both the Scriptures and our Lord's faithful servants have been exceedingly clear about the great change which is effected by God's transforming power,when a person is brought out of 'The Kingdom Of Darkness' into 'God's Marvelous Light'.There is an emphasis by some,in our generation,on 'The Supposed Physical Miracles',that are taking place,but Spurgeon boldly and correctly insists -"The spiritual miracle is greater than the physical one." That is why regeneration and its result conversion,are such powerful demonstrations of God's power,because someone who was dead spiritually,is brought to life,by God's Sovereign Power,and the change which takes place can be seen,undeniably,in the life of such a person.John Gill in the article 'The Meaning,Causes and Subjects of Conversion'.taken from his 'Body Of Practical And Doctrinal Divinity',distinguishes Regeneration from Conversion in this respect-Regeneration is something that God does,the person that is regenerated is completely passive,but in conversion(which is the result of being regenerated)both God and man are active.God's converting grace enables men to turn from sin to God,but the person actually does 'The Turning' .Its similar to faith,which is the gift of God,but God does not believe for the sinner,the one who comes to Christ believes on him.In conversion Gill teaches that there is a turning which takes place-1.The turn of the heart to God.-The heart is previously set upon the things of this world and the affections are now turned Godward.2.A man is turned from darkness to light.3.Men turn from their own righteousness to the righteousness of Christ.-Self righteousness is the religion of the unsaved man(no matter what religion they profess to believe).Not so with the religion of 'The Bible',Christ's sheep trust in his righteousness and abhor their own.This Free Grace Broadcaster Issue #195 Conversion also contains articles from these godly men-William S.Plumer,J.C.Ryle,A.W.Pink,and D.Martyn Lloyd Jones.It is an excellent publication for introducing people to valued writings from the past.
