From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—This oversize counting book features 10 endangered animals drawn beautifully in charcoal. The images of lions, tigers, elephants, penguins, and more are so detailed that they appear on first look to be black-and-white photos. Each spread presents an animal, such as a single male lion, two gorillas, three giraffes, etc. Soft, moody text printed in orange accompanies the images. "One lion sits and watches his rough-and-tumble pride. He surveys the golden savanna, and a flicker catches his eye—something moving in the grass." "Four tigers rest in dappled shade. The mother raises her magnificent head. She is a warrior of the forest, heavily muscled, a flash of fire and night that brings oblivion to her prey." The end pages expand upon the status of the animals, from the endangered to those less threatened. Their general habitat is noted along with information regarding the number of the species now left. VERDICT A stunning portrait of beautiful creatures in a book with a strong environmental message.—Roxanne Burg, Orange County Public Library, CA

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Counting Lions Evokes empathy and praise for each animal's peril in the real world. By Beth Molasky Amazing drawings evoking the sense and dramatic issues facing each endangered species. Each drawing consumes the reader with its beauty, and the stories behind the drawing share the sense of peril. Can't wait to read it and share with my granddaughter this holiday. Praise worthy editorials and nature and conservation in today's world for survival of these beautiful animals.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Eye catching volume of animals. By Bob Walch If you are looking for an oversized but impressive animal counting book this is the one you want. The charcoal drawings of wild animals are breath taking and your little one will be totally entranced by the critters that are gazing back at him/her from these large pages. You'll have fun counting the animals and learning a little more about each featured one. Note: given its size this book may be too large for a small child to easily handle so the youngster will need a little assistance.....this is definitely a "laptime" book!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Lyrical, moody, and informative By LP Salas Cotton's lyrical, moody, and still informative prose passages combine with Walton's stunning charcoal art (I'm still not 100% convinced that these are not fantastic black-and-white photos) in this wonderful, beautiful book. I feel like something about the essence of each creature has really been captured.
