From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—Rambunctious Princess Pinecone is the smallest warrior in her kingdom, but what she lacks in size, she makes up for in enthusiasm. Tired of receiving novelty sweaters for her birthday, Pinecone asks her parents for a big, strong battle horse—and receives a chubby little pony with a vacant expression, and incurable flatulence, instead. Though he doesn't fit the standard requirements of the typical trusty steed—"It's too small! It's too round! And I think its eyes are looking in different directions…(This was true, but only sometimes.)"—the little pony proves to be a surprising asset on the day of her great battle. Chunky, colorful digital illustrations provide plenty of detail to keep readers entertained; older children will enjoy exploring all of the different posters marking Pinecone's walls, or some of the sillier warriors in the battle fray, including one sneakily eating a hot dog. The text contains a healthy dose of alliteration and buzzwords that will boost vocabulary ("Pinecone was flabbergasted, flummoxed, floored!") while making for a fun read-aloud. VERDICT A highly recommended, charmingly illustrated tale of teamwork and tenderness.—Ashleigh Williams, School Library Journal

I loved the fact that Princess Pinecone wants to be a proper warrior, and the fact that she gets a fat, flatulent pony instead is very cute and well told. I too once coveted a gift (an EZ Bake Oven) that I didn't get, and as a knitter I can sympathize with how tired Princess Pinecone is with quirky, handmade sweaters. That both kinds of "unwanted" gifts come in handy at the climax of the great warrior contest is a good lesson for kids not to judge a gift horse in the mouth (every pun intended). My only gripe is that the female warriors are almost exclusively drawn as scantily clad warrior nymphs and that's a tired cliche. Still, I think my niece will love it, and I hope she grows to view all the crocheted and knitted gifts I send her way are made with love, and might possibly come in handy someday. You never know.

Excellent, Despite the Fart Jokes By Meganasaurus I purchased this book as a treat for when my niece comes to visit, and I'm pretty satisfied with it.I adore "Hark! A Vagrant" (Ms. Beaton's web comic) and decided that this would be a great way of showing her how much I appreciate her work. All in all, I enjoy the book (my niece hasn't come to stay, yet). The illustrations are excellent, and Princess Pinecone is a strong character, in the vein of Merida from the movie "Brave", rather than the typical 'pink princess who needs to be saved' trope. My only quibble - and this more because I fear what my sister will say if my niece tells her - is the VERY minimal "potty humor": there are a few jokes about farts. And the only reason the fart jokes bug me is because we've had a heck of a time trying to teach my niece that "potty humor" is often not appropriate. If you're okay with a couple of jokes about flatulence, though, then I HIGHLY recommend it! I can't wait to share it with my niece!

It is so much better. It turns out that Princess Pinecone is a pint-sized warrior princess. Her birthday is coming up and, in the past, all she was given were cute and cuddly sweaters. To make sure this year is different, she lets everyone know that what she really wants is a warrior horse. What she gets is a cute, little round pony who has a bit of an issue with tummy gas.The story is cute and one that appeals to younger children (warrior, ponies, and gas - what's not to love?) I really love the illustrations - the messy bedroom one is one that reminds me of both of my daughters rooms when they were growing up (except theirs were even more of a mess.) I look forward to reading this book to our little ones - it is unusual to find a Princess book that will appeal as much to boys as to girls.
