God has a plan to make you stronger--and it's not what you think. When we think of success, we think of words like bigger, more, and better. Bigger paycheck, more security, better reputation. But what if God's perspective on success was radically different than our own? What if the things we seek to avoid--pain, suffering, weakness, insecurity--were the very things he used to mold us into his image? With insights born from his own difficult journey, Clayton King offers a truly liberating understanding of weakness and suffering--not as God's punishment, but as his pruning. Revealing the God who is a companion in our most difficult seasons, King shows us that when we are in Christ, our deepest pain becomes the source of our greatest power, and our times of testing become our strongest testimony. If you struggle to make sense of this broken world or your own seemingly hopeless situation, you'll find in this book not only hope for a brighter future but purpose in the imperfect present."This book is more than a page-turner. It's a game-changer. It's courageous. It's bold. It's vulnerable and funny and redemptive. It's a revolutionary way to see suffering."--from the foreword by Mark Batterson, New York Times bestselling author of The Circle Maker and The Grave Robber"What a rare and beautiful gift it is for a man to fully open his broken heart. My friend Clayton does just that in this book. He helped me see God isn't breaking me but actually making me."--Lysa TerKeurst, president, Proverbs 31 Ministries; New York Times bestselling author of The Best Yes"Clayton is one of the most gifted gospel communicators I've ever known--one of my preaching heroes. But this book is not a message, it is the revelation of his soul."--J. D. Oelger Clayton King recently spoke at our church in Kansas City and I bought this book from him after the service. I paid full price for the book and I am reviewing this book with no promise other than a fair review. Before hearing him speak, I did not know Clayton personally or by reputation, but I was familiar with many of his fellow pastor-friends and contemporaries, such as Johnnie Moore, David Nasser and Perry Noble, following them through social media and/or keep up with their teachings through podcasts. On staff at South Carolina’s NewSpring Church and Anderson University, and Clayton King Ministries, King's in-person delivery and message did not disappoint. My sole disagreement with him was his personal description of himself as a "country boy." While he was dressed in jeans and a casual shirt, I noticed his rather spiffy-looking loafers as he left the stage. In my experience, most country boys would wear jeans and boots versus loafers, but this is likely an inconsequential observation. What a great book! As humans, we live in a fallen condition on an imperfect planet. As such, we will experience times of trouble, loss, disappointment, abandonment and discord. These times can and will test believers and non-believers alike. Contrary to "prosperity gospel" messaging, Christians will deal with the same challenges in life as non-believers. It is how we deal with these times that can point the way to Christ. If we're going to get through these challenging times, we need to be equipped with the tools to respond effectively and obediently. Stronger was written to help each of us deal with these challenges. The unique approach of this book is in the actual story itself, because Clayton uses his unique account of personal loss to give hope to every reader. We all have a story, a unique narrative of failure, success and just life that relates the actions we have taken motivated by the thoughts in our heads. And Clayton’s story of loss is both challenging and inspiring. After praying for God to use him, Clayton experienced a succession of family losses over a twelve-year period. This is not to suggest God was punishing, or even testing Clayton. Rather, God used this unique story of loss to prepare him to minister to others. His story is unique to him, but his story and what he learned in coping with loss can benefit every reader.Walking through chapters like Humility, Vulnerability and Worship, Clayton lays out specific approaches to help anyone deal with loss. Combining thoughts and quotes from a disparate group of history's thinkers (GK Chesterton, Maya Angelou, the Apostle Paul, CS Lewis, Brene Brown, Tim Keller and Cormac McCarthy, for example) Clayton encourages us to embrace our challenges to learn more of God and his grace, in other to point others to Him. While introducing him, our pastor said he had laughed and cried as he read Stronger. He was right, and I think you will agree as well. God has his hand on Clayton and can use his story to help you deal with tough times through the message of Stronger.

When it comes to the chorus, there is a sense of deep comfort to sing: "And now, let the weak say I am strong; let the poor say I am rich; because of what the Lord has done... Give thanks."When the tough times comes, the tough gets going. Hard times can beat us down, but they can also reveal God's strength in us. This is the essence of this book, written by founder and president of Clayton King Ministries. Also a teaching pastor at NewSpring Church, King lives through really difficult times. One such time is having to deal with nine deaths in his family, and him giving a eulogy for every one of them. He believes in what Tozer said that it takes one who had been deeply wounded to be able to be used by God in demonstrating the deep love of God and the wide extent of grace. For King, hard times may make him unhappy, but in God's grace, they can make him holy. If there is no death, there is no resurrection. If there is no cross, there is no empty tomb. If there is no crisis, there is a lack of opportunity to demonstrate God's power over all. This is not to say that crisis is a tool for God's ends. It is to say that regardless of what happens to us, it is the Lord who always holds up his end of the bargain, even when we feel down and out. Things that break him are the very things that God uses to draw the suffering closer to himself. Ten chapters demonstrate what strength in God means for the author.First, King starts with what it means to be at the throes of brokenness. All kinds of things from bones to hearts; from relationships to spirits; from physical to spiritual; we are all susceptible to being broken in a broken world. King writes about how he finds strength as he searches for the light amid the cracks in a dark moment of his life. Weaknesses and problems are not to be avoided but embraced. For brokenness often precedes blessings. Second, the things that hurt us can very well humble us and teach us the essence of humility. With humility comes honesty. With honesty comes an open invitation to follow after the ways of Christ, who himself was humble and honest. In Christ, we see the full revelation of how power is made perfect in weakness. He ties in the presence of weaknesses as a way in which we can grow intimacy with God. King says it well: "Hard times make us humble, and humility makes us stronger." Third, we need not be ashamed to share our testimony of our hard times. The scars are real and keep us truthful. With the scars, we are reconnected back to the times of lowliness and learns all over again to be grateful and to be humble. It also tells us what it means to be human. Fourth, when troubles and persecutions come, when tough times and panic situations approach, we become more attuned to the presence of God. Suppose we are exempted from the tough situations of life, will we then fail to appreciate God more? In other words, when there is no going gets tough moments, how is a tough person able to get going? Fifth, we look at strength and learn that the true source of strength and power comes not from within us but from the Word of God in us. It was at the cross where God's power was made manifest in full. Sixth, we need to learn to live a life without regret. It is like crying over spilled milk. Our attitude should be like Paul who leaves all these things behind and to press onward toward the prize that God has called him to attain. For our biggest messes can become our biggest messages from God to us. Seventh, we learn vulnerability need not shut us down but opens us up for courage, for strength, and for truth bearing witness. It is also an invitation toward intimacy with God. Eighth, as we take the bull of hard times by the hands of faith and courage, we grow in understanding. We are able to pray the most difficult prayers, say the most difficult truths, and testify in the most daunting circumstances. Above all, we see God's purposes in all things, even in our suffering. Ninth, we are lifted up above our lives of mediocrity into a life of worship. We want to lift up the Name of Jesus. We move from human positioning toward a heartfelt posture of letting God take control. Worship, weakness, suffering, and submission are all on the same side of intimacy with God. Tenth, at the end of it all, we will find it all worth it because God's glory will be revealed. This eternal glory, just like 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 says, will make all of our endeavours, our sufferings, our pains, our trials, all worth it.This is a powerful book based on the sheer strength weaknesses, sufferings, pains, and trials. The waves of difficulties may try to wash over us and to drown us. The tsunamis of challenges may not seem to end. Just when it is dark and bleak, the gospel comes like a knight in shining armour to lift us out of the difficult times. This book at times looks like a modern rendition of 2 Corinthians 12:8-10 where Paul himself survives on the basis of Christ's Word, that God's power is made perfect in weakness. If you are discouraged, read this book and recognize that you are not alone in your struggles. If you are in despair because of the circumstances you are facing, there are stories in this book that reminds you that God strength is made perfect in our weaknesses. If you are depressed, disillusioned, or in some sort of distress, work through the specific chapters according to where you are, and let the testimonies of the author and the stories told within bring some comfort and assurance. Above all, may the content of the book draw you closer to Christ, and to remind you in a special manner that God cares for you, and desires greater intimacy with you.One does not need to feel depressed or disenchanted before picking up this book. You can start preparing it for yourself or the people or community you love. For troubles and challenges of life will come. It is simply a matter of when. Just like Paul urges the Ephesians to put on the armour of God, we can put on the armour of God's Word and presence as we prepare ourselves to battle the onslaught and deceptions of the devil. Be strong and courageous in the power of God's might.Rating: 5 stars of 5.conradeThis book is provided to me courtesy of Baker Books and Graf-Martin Communications in exchange for an honest review. People affected by a loved one's addiction suffer silently in church pews. I was one of them. I'm Juliet. Sometimes I wish I could be someone else, with another name altogether, someone whose life is more comedy than tragedy. During the twelve years I was married to a cocaine-addicted Christian, I was overwhelmed with isolation and shame as I sat next to my ex-husband in church week after week. No one fathomed our family skeletons. How could I tell anyone? God stirred my spirit to seek personal healing and give voice to my reality. Through Him, I found freedom from silence and redemption for the life dreams I thought were forever lost. Same Dress, Different Day: A Spiritual Memoir of Addiction and Redemption chronicles my journey from victim to victor as I struggled to break free from codependency's suffocating cycle. I learned to see my Savior as the soul mate and provider my chemically dependent spouse could never be. God's healing grace is not only for the addicted, but also for the broken ones who love them.

I finished it 3 days ago and am still processing all the messaging it offers. I have purchased two additional books for friends who will benefit from the author's wisdom! I read about 2 books a week and can't recall ever reading a book with such pointed eloquence. The words and imagery are beautiful while the story provides insights and lessons which are timeless and unremitting. I genuinely look forward to other books from this author because I learned so much from this read - this book taught me things I will never unlearn and know I will find myself re-teaching to others. Thank you for your courage, faith, and for sharing your story and relationship with God - with all your readers.

By Amazon Customer This is a wonderfully written, beautiful book that takes the reader through lost hopes, dreams and despair to revival restored hope, love and elation--Gods love and redemption. I found this gem right when I started to wake up from my own co-dependent denial in a crumbled, alcoholic marriage. It was quite literally a God-send, in His perfect timing, as it gave me strength and encouragement to make decisions in my life that would impact the lives of many. Every sentence seeped into my veins and poured into my broken soul as I related to Juliet's story in a profound way. Although the ending to my story is not finished yet, I know that I have a loving God that sees me and will continue seeing me through till the end.

Experience the morning homilies of Pope Francis and witness  how he continues to change the life of the Catholic Church. Shortly after seven in the morning, Pope Francis gives a brief homily in the little Vatican chapel of Saint Martha, in front of an audience that is always different: gardeners, office workers, nuns and priests, as well as a growing group of journalists. It is a set appointment, and in some ways a revolutionary innovation, where a pope speaks to everyone, off the cuff, without any written text, as he would have done as a parish priest. Encountering Truth is a collection of highlights from these homilies from March 2013 to May 2014. Along with summaries by Radio Vaticana (who recorded and transcribed the homilies) and commentary by Father Antonio Spadaro, SJ, these reflections provide moments of inspiration, simplicity, and a glimpse into the papal world very few ever get to experience.

About the Author

POPE FRANCIS is the first Latin American to be elected to the chair of Peter. Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he was ordained as a priest in 1969. He served as head of the Society of Jesus in Argentina from 1973 to 1979. In 1998 he became the archbishop of Buenos Aires, and in 2001 a cardinal. Following the resignation of his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, on February 28, 2013, the conclave elected Bergoglio, who chose the papal name Francis in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi.

Early every morning, Pope Francis celebrates a personal sort of Mass in the small Saint Martha chapel at the Vatican. The audience is made up of gardeners, nuns, cooks, office workers, and always changes. What doesn't change is that the pope gives his homilies without notes just as he did when he was a parish priest. This book features highlights from almost 200 daily homilies covering a year from March 2013 to May 2014.I was enthralled by Antonio Spadaro's introduction which has an in-depth look at how Pope Francis prepares, including what the pope thinks is important in contemplating and conveying the Word of God to the faithful. Spadaro also gives a "map" of the way Francis circles round various topics, engaging them from different angles as the liturgical readings progress day to day. That was a new idea for me, that to get a full sense of his teachings one must patiently look at them from day to day.I have been reading these homilies as daily devotionals and can testify that the "circular" approach is true. As one works through the liturgy with Francis, one begins to see the way he backs up and tilts his head for different angles on the material we've heard so many times that we take it for granted.========"The hunt for the only treasure that we can take with us into the life after life is a Christian's reason for being. It is the reason for being that Jesus explains to the disciples in the passage from the Gospel of Matthew: "Where your treasure is, there also will your heart be." ..."The Lord has made us restless so that we will seek him, find him, grow. But if our treasure is a treasure that is not near the Lord, that is not of the Lord, our heart becomes restless for things that are no good, for these other treasures ... So many people, we ourselves are restless ... To have this, to get that, and in the end our heart becomes tired; it is never satisfied; it becomes tired, lazy, a heart without love. The weariness of the heart. Let's think about that. ..."========(I honestly never thought about St. Augustine's "restless until we rest in you" and "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Maybe it's obvious, but it wasn't to me.)About halfway through I began expecting to be surprised with each homily, even if only by a throw away line that illustrated the main point. The surprise was good because it made me rethink issues, look deeper into myself, and learn to know God a little better. To be honest, that's not usually the way I feel after reading Pope Francis's writing. So this is a rare find for me. (What can I say? Pope Benedict's style resonated with me from the get-go. It ain't Pope Francis's fault. I get that.)These are pretty short, about a page and a half usually, and each has the references for the scriptural readings on which Francis was commenting. This one's good for people who want to know Pope Francis better, need daily inspiration, want a good gift to give new Catholics, need to reinvigorate their relationship with God, and more. Definitely recommended.

Everyday homilies from Pope Francis By Stuart Dunn Encountering Truth is a collection of Pope Francis' daily homilies given from St. Martha's Chapel. Fr. Antonio Spadaro wrote the introduction for this 400 page tome. In it he explains the nature of the homilies, Pope Francis' method of delivery, as well as the people who normally attend these homilies, This sets the stage for the homilies and puts them in the correct light before reading them. There are 186 homilies in total with each of them approximately two pages long. They are presented chronologically from March 2013 to March 2014. At the end of every homily are the Scripture passages from that particular. I'd recommend reading the Scripture passages first for context, and then reading the homily. The homilies are vast and varying, and include topics such as hypocrisy, prayer for the Middle East, the idolatry of money. While I recommend reading every homily, you can just look at the Table of Contents and pick a topic that you think you need to read. One of the ones that spoke to me recently was "Never judge, never bad-mouth." In this homily, Pope Francis tells us, "Do not judge anyone because only the Lord can judge." Next, he tells us to "zip it," and if we have something to say, then say it to the person directly or someone who can help the situation, and not to everybody. Gossip is a big struggle of mine, and you can hear and read so eloquently on why it is harmful or bad for you and the people you are gossiping about. However, hearing it put so bluntly is what some people (myself included) need from time to time.Encountering Truth: Meeting God in the Everyday is one of the latest books from Image Books and sadly is among the list of last books Image will be publishing. (Read more here.) I'm not sure if we can change Image's mind, but if more Catholics read more and bought more books, we might could. So if you are looking for a solid read, straight from the mouth of Pope Francis, this is the book for you! So pick up a copy, and try and read at least one a day.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Worth Savoring & Sharing By Trixie L “Pope Francis insists on the dynamic element of the Church. In his homilies he is acting as a teacher of spiritual life, inciting us to move forward, to go to the existential peripheries, on mission. The way becomes the great metaphor of spiritual and ecclesiastical life. Only on the way is encounter possible. The way is, in this sense, the place of truth.” – Antonio SpadaroPope Francis has quickly become known for his approachable nature, his humility, and his relevant messages. His cheerful smile and undeniable warmth have made him a favorite among Catholics and non-Catholics alike. Encountering Truth captures these qualities in the most beautiful way with Pope Francis’ homilies from morning mass at Saint Martha’s chapel. Every morning, he observes mass with a devoted few; average people who are eager to join in the powerful celebration and gain inspiration from the pope. The simple homilies from these daily masses offer insight into Biblical passages as well as sound advice for those of us striving for faith in God in spite of the hectic pace of the modern world. Many of them have been collected in Encountering Truth so that devoted followers around the world can share in the wonders of the daily mass from a tiny Vatican chapel.Beginning with an engaging introduction by Antonio Spadaro, this book offers wisdom, insight, and most of all, reflections on scripture that are inspiring and comforting. With homilies focusing on grace, humility, courage, prayer, weakness, truth, and, hope, among others, this collection of 186 of Pope Francis’ brief homilies is an absolute gift. The brevity of each homily allows for a brief reading when there is time or a more in-depth study along with the provided Biblical passages. There is no need to rush through this book reading each homily; indeed, it is so much more beautiful when each passage is savored and fully appreciated.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Great practical communication insight for all! By HNmommy Christy writes in an easy-to-read, friend to friend, style that I really enjoyed. She shares specific, insightful skills that even the best communicator can benefit from. I appreciated the reminders and the things I hadn't considered before about how we communicate, as both speaker and listener. I really liked how she begins each day with a Bible verse and then she explains how to integrate that principle in our interaction with others.Get this book - you won't be disappointed!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. What a wonderful, practical book! By Cecilia Moore Christy has incorporated bits of wisdom and humor in a format that is practical and entertaining. She uses real world examples that we all can relate to in order to emphasize how to achieve positive communication skills. I love how each chapter addresses a specific skill and gives practical tips on how to develop those skills and reinforces it all with scripture. This would be a great resource for a women's bible study as there is a workbook available too!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I just finished reading this excellent book "cover to cover" so to speak By Julie Carlson I just finished reading this excellent book "cover to cover" so to speak. This book doubles as a wonderful read-through or as a daily devotional. Christy Largent writes an engaging, thoughtful communication devotional with well-chosen scriptures for each day. Her summary at the end of the book gets to the heart of why we should seek to be positive communicators.

It's a beloved tale: young David rises from the obscurity of the shepherd's field to seize the throne of Israel. But what is often forgotten is that as David walked away from Samuel with the anointing oil still dripping from his head, his royal destiny would not be fulfilled for over twenty years. Drawing from the examples of David and his own experiences, Joshua L. McElhaney speaks to the heart of the young minister. Using illustrations from the life of one of Israel's greatest kings, he demonstrates the importance patience, trust, and submission in developing godly attitudes and strong ministries. In the journey of this book, you will see how the successes, influence, and greatness of David's kingship weren't defined by how he handled the throne. His achievements came from how he handled the cave... Published by Kindom Publisher (.com)

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Book for Every Christian Leader to Read and to Share By A. Scott Ingram Joshua McElhaney has written an excellent book for those of us in, and those looking towards, Christian ministry as a full-time vocation. The calling of God on the life of an individual does not work the same way as a professional career or climbing the corporate ladder. Instead we are called to humble ourselves, serve anywhere we can, and honor those in leadership above us until God promotes us in His timing. Using the life of Israel's King David as his example, Joshua teaches us that our focus on the journey from cave to palace cannot be one of self-promotion. Instead it is about going deeper in our prayer life, developing our character and integrity, and growing in our relationship with the Lord through His Word and in the Holy Spirit. This will be a book I recommend to the men and women I disciple in ministry for years to come.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. King in a cave By Javier O. Josh McElhaney writes with a deep passion for this generation of young ministers, so I encourage you to buy this book and read it in fact read it multiple times and soak up all that you can and be blesse by reading "King in a cave"-Javier Ordorica
