In June 2011 a mission team co-led by Dwight and Emma Saunders (a dad and daughter) from the US was serving at an orphanage in Africa. Moving through the orphanage that day, Emma found, in the darkened corner, an emaciated and dying baby girl. Struggling for life, her big brown eyes seemed to be pleading, "Please! Will you help me?" Emma ran to her dad, Dwight, calling, "Daddy! Daddy! Come quick! This baby! She's dying! We have to do something!" Following Emma to the darkened corner of the room, he was stunned at what he found, words inadequate to describe. Emaciated. Mere skin draped over her protruding bones. Her sweet head much larger than her boney exposed limbs. He gasped. ‘Dying’ is the only word that really could describe her. And at that divinely God-orchestrated moment, Almighty God broke his heart for her. One baby girl, but a picture perfect representative of the millions and millions of orphans globally needing someone to desperately care about them. Emma and Dwight learned that day that this baby girl was actually just over a year old and she weighed barely six pounds. She was truly dying!

I could not put the book down! It's a riveting tale of a mother's unrelenting determination to rescue a teeny, tiny orphan baby that has endured more tragedy in a few short months than most do in a lifetime. Linny Lee brings you right into the plot with her.... This is a story that was crucial to tell and I experienced a myriad of emotions throughout the story that finally left me inspired, encouraged, and committed to the plight of the orphan. While reading this incredible journey, I noticed my heart beating quickly with anticipation...even though I already knew the outcome. Linny's words just pull you in....Other times throughout the story, my tears were free flowing and yet there were also moments of great rejoicing and triumph.I don't want to spoil the ending.....but really it's just the beginning.Ruby is my hero and I'm privileged to know her mom Linny. One day soon, I hope to hug their necks in real life!!~Rebecca (bloggy friend)

It's 'His'story of mercy, love, and grace through a precious gem named Ruby. I started reading her blog about the same time this started unfolding. It was wonderful to be able to put pieces together after all this time. While reading the book, I was reminiscing about the times we were called to pray for the situations at hand, Linny has a heart after God's own heart. Reading each page you can almost see, hear, and feel the emotions during each trial. Her obedience to rely on the scriptures she memorized and her prayer life with fasting grabbed my attention. She used God's words back to Him during times of gratefulness, thanksgiving, fear, sadness, anger, and joy. This book is a must read. I bought extras to share with others! If your heart doesn't explode with awe after reading about Ruby's rescue then you better check to see if it's still beating. It blessed me tremendously. She is truly a miracle and precious gem. I'm proud to say she is my friend...both Linny and Ruby.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. She is doing and will continue to do great things. By M. Kinney I have followed Linny's blog since just before the house fire in 2009. Although I knew most of Ruby's story I couldn't wait to get my hands on the book. I received it yesterday and read it cover to cover. Ruby is truly a miracle, there's no other way to describe her. Reading about all the moments that were God-things (as we call them in our family) were incredible. As she said, 5 min here or there and things would be so different. So excited to see what God has in store for Ruby. She is doing and will continue to do great things.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A sweet contemporary romance, strong characters and a quaint small-town setting By Madison's Library What a beautiful story. Great characters, quaint small-town setting and romance to swoon for, all with a side helping of suspense.Fawn's life changed the moment she realised she was pregnant. Now she is seeing her town of Trapp and its inhabitants in a whole new light. Away from her family and the prestige and comfort it brought, she is beginning to question her faith, her choice in friends and who she can trust. JohnScott's family reached out to Fawn when her family shunned her. He feels a desire to protect and look out for her, but is unsure if he could ever deserve to have a future with her.I loved JohnScott in the first book in the Mended Hearts series, Jaded. He was funny and caring, but we saw him through Ruthie's eyes - as a cousin. In this book we see a whole new side to him - and it's a handsome, romantic, protective, sweet, frustrating side. I can understand Fawn's attraction to him completely. The relationship that gradually builds between Fawn and JohnScott is that perfect mix of comfortable and chemistry-filled tension. The romance is perfectly interwoven with humour, friendship and faith.I would recommend reading the books in series order. While each has a fairly complete story arch, Fawn's story begins in the first book, Jaded, and a whole lot of undercurrent stories continue throughout the two books. I enjoyed the continuation of Ruthie and Dodd's story in this second book, as well as the return of all the other familiar faces of Trapp. Trapp is such an authentic small town where everyone knows everyone (and their business). You can taste the dirt, smell the creosote (if I knew what that smelt like), and hear the town gossip. This beautiful story carefully handles topics of forgiveness, shame, abuse, resilience and love with an authentic and down-to-earth voice. Justified is highly recommended as a great contemporary romance. The publishers provided a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is the second book in her current series and I have now added Varina to my "must read" list of authors. I love how she moved seamlessly to this novel with her characters. She builds some of the more secondary characters from her first novel "Jaded" and makes them the main focus of this novel. The story line continues and you really get to know both the good and bad points of the citizens of Trapp, Texas. I am also please to let you know that I did get the answer to my question of who is Clyde Felton's child!Varina does a nice job of sending a message without being preachy and conveying God's love and forgiveness even when we are having trouble forgiving ourselves. I am also pleased to tell you that she has a third novel in this series coming out soon-I can't wait! This book was given to me by NetGalley for my honest opinion.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Better than the first in the series! By M. Kay DeFreese Justified is book 2 of the Mended Hearts series. After the weekend I read Jaded and when I finished Jaded I just had to read Justified which focuses on Fawn Blaylock. In the first book she was the spoiled daughter of the rich cattleman, Neil Blaylock. Toward the end of the first book Fawn had just told her parents that she was pregnant and was promptly kicked out of the house with nothing but the clothes on her back. Neil Blaylock was a hypocritical Christian from the first book. He was a so called pillar of the Trapp, Texas church. In this book we saw all the townspeople from the first book. In the first book I didn't care much for Lynda Turner but in this book she softens up quite a bit. She's still cynical but a little smoother on the edges. I loved Ruthie in this book. She is so down to earth and helped Fawn adjust to being poor. The toxic church from the first book is back and is a little better now that Neil Blaylock is no longer an elder but still has people in there who gossip and look down their noses at people who fall from grace but that is typical of any church. And then there is the biological father of Fawn's baby Tyler Cruz. Fawn does not know if she should be with the baby's father. She thinks a baby should have both a mother and a father but Tyler has let her down several times. He's cheated on her, denied paternity and even slapped her around yet she takes him back six times. Will there be a 7th? There is a growing friendship with JohnScot. At first he was there for her to help her out but the more time he spent with her he began to see the good in her that she did not see in herself. The main problem with Fawn is that she kept putting herself down. She knows God has forgiven her for her past mistakes but finds it hard to forgive herself.I highly recommend that you read Jaded first before you read Justified. You will enjoy the story more if you know some of the backstory of some of the other characters. At the end of this book I got to read the first four chapters of the next book Jilted. This book will focus on Linda and Clyde. I'm looking forward to this one and have put it on my to be read list. Thanks to David C. Cook and Netgalley for providing me an e-copy to read and review. Justified is due for release on June 2, 2015

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. a must read! By phil wuthier This is a great book! The first hand stories from around the world captured my attention, but I also found direct applicability of the content in everyday relationships. For the many in our own country that have rejected established church, this book provides a message of hope towards a deeper, life transforming relationship with Christ. It is a book for "thinkers" - you may well wrestle with some of the ideas; and a book for "dreamers" - those who dream crazy ideas of how to reach those who have rejected religion, but still find Jesus attractive. Ultimately it is a book about Jesus - that he is greater, more attractive, more pre-eminent, more winsome than we ever realized! The book has challenged me... but it's now a favorite... one of my top 5 ever! read it!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Challenging Perspectives By untill This is a challenging book on what the church around the world looks like. Bryan causes readers to think about how someone becomes a follower of Jesus and how that is lived out. God is at work in the world today, and sometimes that looks different than a typical North American believer might expect. Readers will find some ideas to agree with, some ideas to disagree with ,and some ideas to think about.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A New Movement among Converts to Christ in Hinduism, Islam and Buddhism. By Mary Lou's Reviews Bryan Bishop’s 2015 book, Boundless, chronicles the journeys of Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and Native Americans who come into a relationship with Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord, but choose to stay within the context of their world religion and not take on the name “Christian.” The reasons in all these cases is the believers’ choice to separate themselves from the Western face of Christianity predominant in their culture and the negative implications of the name “Christian.” As Bishop says: “For many Muslim, Hindu, and Buddhist people, to become ‘Christian’ means to leave behind their own cultural identity and to join that [perceived] immoral Western way of life. It means joining a foreign culture just as much as it means becoming a believer in the teachings of the Bible…If people from these community-oriented cultures…no longer have to take on the label ‘Christian’ to become ‘one who belongs to Christ,’ that change alone could remove an enormous barrier” [to their conversion] (p.17).What is fascinating about Bishop’s book is his sense that “We are in the midst of a bursting out of creativity in faith in Christ. It’s happening in places most of us haven’t seen. What’s happening holds the promise for new dimensions of faith in Christ as we see that faith lived out in diverse ways in other cultures” (p.19)… When people have tried to obey the Bible within their own culture, without having to join the ‘Christian’ culture, they have begun to follow Christ in new ways. Faith is breaking out of its colonial box” (p.30).Bishop describes many of these converts’ conversions and current spiritual practices to help readers see the legitimacy of their relationship with Jesus. Missionary researchers I queried, who are currently concentrating of God’s work in the Middle East, validated the fact that large numbers of people are coming to life-changing faith in Jesus Christ in these movements. Still, debate rages about the theological foundations these converts have in scripture, whether they are becoming syncretists and thus dilute the gospel, and whether they honor God as they attend the mosque or recite Hindu chants in various cultural practices. Bishop admits that these are legitimate concerns, and that there is the possibility of many errors, as people (nationals and missionaries alike) journey down this very different approach to being Christian within another world religion. But he thinks the journey is worthwhile and is reaping eternal fruit. His book will stretch the theological presuppositions of many Christians, but it is a stretch worth considering. A must read in order to grasp new approaches to God’s work among people in other world religions and cultures.

He allowed Melissa to take him to get things and was getting a little better with others. That made me feel happy. I didn't like the part about Melissa's mother and how she acted with Melissa. That made me feel scared. My review: I loved reading this book with my daughters. We had the opportunity to read the first book together and jumped at the chance to read this one too. This is another exceptional book filled with excellent Christian morals and lessons for young girls and for everyone really. I enjoyed watching the characters develop, learn, grow, and see Kate's and her friends' dreams realized and come true. I would highly recommend this read for anyone with girls, and I think it's a wonderful book to read as a family and is perfect way to spend time together and grow more with one another.

I loved that Kate's dream came true....boarding horses. I enjoyed reading how the townspeople came to help Kate's family when they had volunteered to help with the horse show.I liked Silver Spurs because Kate is nice to Melissa. Kate tries her best to be kind and respectful to Melissa even though she wasn't kind in return. Kate was very patient with Melissa.I like that Melissa was kind to Kate's brother even though she was not kind to anyone else.I really liked the act Kate performs for Melissa at the end of the book.I would highly recommend this book to a friend because it teaches a lot about kindness and teaches one ought not to think always of themselves.I received this book from the publisher for my honest opinion which I have given.

Second Great Book By Dixie Kate, Tori and Colt are getting ready to have a big show called Silver Spurs but due to unforeseen circumstances they may have to cancel it. Will they be able to keep the show going? Will an enemy become a friend?I loved reading this book and seeing the family and friends help one another. I enjoyed that the characters were more developed in this book. The reader was really able to get to know them. The author made Kate more loyal and trusting toward her friends. Also, Tori became braver at riding and sticking up for herself and her friends. Colt appeared more laid back in this book. He was more willing to help other people. Overall, I loved the book and recommend this book and series to anyone who loves horses and friendship.

In the Tree Top: A New Lullaby, by Candide Jones

Review Using the well-loved Rock-a-Bye Baby lyrics as their springboard, a writer/editor with a literary-press background and her collaborator, an accomplished watercolorist, have created a pretty new picture book shaped around reassuring verses. Rock-a-bye baby in the tree top / When the wind blows the cradle will rock, / When the bough breaks the cradle will fall, / And down will come baby cradle and all. This traditional lullaby, known to generations (the original rhyme goes back centuries), has long inspired children s authors, music artists and undoubtedly parents and other caregivers to put their own stamp on it. Jones (a writer, editor, and advising assistant director of Wake Forest University Press) and artist Emery contribute to the mix with a combination of tender new verses and delicate watercolor paintings. Jones begins her addition to the familiar rhyme: When the bough breaks / I ll be right there / And I will catch you as you fall through the air. She continues in that soothing vein The world is so big and you are so small, / I ll always hear you whenever you call and ends with this parental affirmation: Trees grow up tall / But love never stops ... / Someday you ll go climbing / To the tree tops! Emery s illustrations, rendered in a soft, cool color palette, provide an opportunity for cozy parent-child interaction, too, guided by Jones back-of-book, seek-and-find list of people and animals to be discovered throughout: p.7 One green hound dog, one baby, p.13 Two hound dogs, two yellow fish, five horses, one mother, one baby, p.21 One big bear, three cats, one bird, one squirrel, two bunnies, one raccoon, and one baby! Do you see the train? A musical performance of Jones new verses, sung by recording artist Laurelyn Dossett, available as a free download, demonstrates the words rhythmic pattern. A notice at the website states that a portion of the book s sales will benefit child-abuse prevention and animal welfare nonprofits. A warmhearted, eye-pleasing new Rock-a-Bye Baby picture book in verse, nicely calibrated for cozy bedtime reading. --Kirkus ReviewsIn a serene adaptation of Rock-a-bye Baby by newcomers Jones and Emery, a mother with flowing red hair lulls her child to sleep with promises of unending comfort, love, and devotion, using the metaphor of tree boughs and branches to suggest the child s continuing growth and independence. Mixing angular shapes and bold colors, Emery s watercolors show the mother catching her baby as he falls from a treetop: When the bough breaks, I ll be right there./ And I will catch you as you fall through the air. As the song continues, the images become a dreamscape: a mountainlike formation takes on the characteristics of a bear, with other woodland animals camouflaged in the leafy greenery (an afterword invites readers to seek out these and other hidden creatures). Eventually, the baby grows into a shaggy-haired boy: Trees grow up tall/ But love never stops/ Someday you ll go climbing/ To the tree tops! The more surreal imagery can feel jarring alongside the lullabylike aspects of the text, but Jones s steady verse provides a soothing expansion of the familiar lullaby. Ages 4 8. (BookLife) --Publishers WeeklyParents who enjoy singing to their little ones at bedtime will welcome this new extended version of Rock-a-Bye Baby. The new words feel familiar and nurturing. Parents who enjoy reading bedtime stories will delight in the creatively whimsical watercolor illustrations that depict the two sentence stanzas on every double-page. Small eyes and fingers will delight in finding and pointing out the many hidden humans and animals that disguise themselves seamlessly into the nature-filled renderings. Emery is a talented watercolor artist and his smooth and flowing brushstrokes, as well as his choice of colors, create a delightful ambiance that is just right for a relaxing nighttime reading session…. [T]his is a beautiful retelling of a beloved lullaby that has been created with a lot of heart. --The Children's Book Rview

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. in her book In the Tree Top has redone the song with gentler words- words that comfort and blanket the baby in maternal love and By ramcb As a child, the song Rock-a-bye Baby didn't really scare me but rather perplexed me. Aside from the fact of it being incredibly dangerous, who would be crazy enough to go to the trouble of putting a cradle with a baby in it way up in the top of a tree in the first place? And I did wonder how the little baby fared after having fallen "cradle and all". Today's mothers would probably steer clear of this lullaby altogether but Candide Jones,in her book In the Tree Top has redone the song with gentler words- words that comfort and blanket the baby in maternal love and protection. Her words turn the old lyrics into what really becomes a lullaby that could rock a baby or toddler to sleep. They are soothing and soft and I can see a mother or father with a child in their lap singing or reading this. It reminds me too of The Run Away Bunny whose mother will always be there(whether he wanted her to or not, I always thought).Steve Emery's illustrations are muted pastels that look like they have been gently blown across the page as the cradle was blown-perhaps not so gently- in that tree. He has added the game of finding pictures within his atmospheric pictures. Each page hides secrets for parent and child to discover. His paintings, like Ms. Jones' words, soothe and calm the soul. This is a wonderful book to give to a new mother, father, grandmother or grandfather. Also, I think every preschool and probably every elementary school should own this book. In the Tree Top is a calming safe haven delight.

Not only is her new take on an old lullaby a joy to sing By pl byrd When I was a three-year-old insomniac, the thought of breaking my mother's back by stepping on a crack or falling out of a damn tree used to keep me up at night. I much prefer the softer, more loving sentiments penned by Ms. Jones. Not only is her new take on an old lullaby a joy to sing, but the images are sheer magic. Do yourself and your child a favor: buy this darling book!

But the best part of this book unlike the others I just mentioned, is that it will grow with your child. They will love reading it, singing it and finding the hidden images of animals among the beautiful illustrations. Great gift at Christmas time!!! Enjoy.

Another Catholic classic now on Kindle, “Spiritual Conferences” was published in 1858, the very year Our Lady appeared at Lourdes, France. Written by the celebrated 19th century priest who translated “True Devotion to Mary,” this collection of Fr. Frederick W. Faber’s conferences includes his most famous essays: —"Kindness” (in General, in Thought, Words, and Actions) —"Death” (its aspects, characteristics, how to prepare for it, and a death precious in God’s sight), —"Self-Deceit” (with eight sub-topics: Simplicity, followed by a study on self-deceit, including its source, varieties, characteristics, remedies, and “the place and hour when we become true” to ourselves and, more importantly, to God). —“Why So Little Comes of Frequent Confession” (A Secret of the Spiritual Life We Really Need to Know) —“Weariness in Well-doing” (and How to Overcome It) —“Wounded Feelings” (or---“Getting Over” Ourselves) —“Why Confidence in God is the Only Worship” (and How to Cultivate It) —“Taking Scandal” (or---How to Recognize Our Own Pride) —“A Taste for (Spiritual) Reading---and Its Benefits —“The Monotony of Piety” (and What to Do about It) —“Heaven and Hell” (One or the Other is Our Final Destination) —“All Men Have a Special Vocation” (or---Yes, You Do Have a Purpose in Life!) As Fr. Faber wrote in the Preface of this book, “As these Addresses had neither the formality of Lectures, nor the dignity of Sermons, I have been accustomed to call them Conferences, using the word rather in a foreign than a native sense… There is a sort of general unity in the selection which occupies this Volume, as the Conferences will be found on the whole to apply to matters closely related among themselves, and proper either to one stage of the Spiritual Life, or to stages which have a close affinity with each other. They embody, also, certain views on the relation of grace to natural character, and on what may be called the Natural Side of the Supernatural Life, which I regard as being of considerable importance in these times” —and they are even more important in our own time.
