This book provides a detailed description of the process by which Joseph Smith translated the Book of Mormon. Drawing from firsthand accounts of Joseph himself and the scribes who served with him, From Darkness unto Light explores the difficulties encountered in bringing forth this book of inspired scripture. Recent insights and discoveries from the Joseph Smith Papers project have provided a fuller, richer understanding of the translation and publication of the Book of Mormon. This book helps readers understand that the coming forth of the Book of Mormon was a miracle. Faith and belief are necessary ingredients for one to come to know that Joseph Smith performed the work of a seer in bringing the sacred words of the Book of Mormon from darkness unto light.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Informative and fun to read By R. McMullin My brother-in-law and his son were talking about this book a while back, and it piqued my interest. I really enjoyed reading about the process of translation and publication of the Book of Mormon. The authors used source material from those who supported the effort, and from those who strongly opposed it.

An engaging eye-witness account of the translation of the Book of Mormon By Amazon Customer This tells the story of the translating of the Book of Mormon based upon extensive research into the LDS church's Joseph Smith Papers project. There are little known facts here not often told in the LDS narrative. For example, EB Grandin gouged Joseph Smith. I won't tell more, but it's definitely worth the read. If you want to know what really happened based upon contemporary eye witness accounts and not the fuzzy recollections of hearsay evidence, you'll definitely want to get this book and read it.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. The best and most up-to-date history on the subject By Bruce F. Webster The authors, drawing upon the massive research produced by the Joseph Smith Papers project, have written the clearest, most detailed, and most accurate account of the production of the Book of Mormon. Those who seek to offer their own explanations must account for the historical references used herein.

It has been all of exciting, sobering, thought-provoking, prayer-inspiring, clearly presented, easy to read, and spot on. You might find yourself uncomfortable at times as you digest the details of what is to come, and with a renewed resolve to stand for the Truth at others. Mr. Adams takes the reader to Scripture and Scripture alone to present a vivid view of what is to come. If you want a comprehensive education on the Bible's message about end times, this book is for you. There are a lot of speculative novels out there on this subject that lack in substance and veracity but say what many people want to hear...this is not one of them. You will be armed with the truth from God's Word on this subject, condensed and readily accessible all in one place. Must-read.

Blackburn In these Last Days which are so full of the deception that Jesus warned about, it's rare indeed to find a book that tells the Biblical TRUTH about the times in which we live. God's truth is a treasure, and opening this book is like opening a treasure chest of His truth as it pertains to the end times and the controversial subject of the rapture. Well-researched and well-written, this is a book of sound Biblical doctrine. As one who has studied Bible prophecy for more than thirty years, I highly recommend "The Approaching Apocalypse" to those who seek to be "Biblically Correct" and prepared to "endure to the end" of the Great Tribulation when believers will be caught up to meet the returning King of Kings! Well done, Mr. Adams!

Walker This is the best $20 you shall spend on a Bible book on end time teachings from someone not trying to pick your pocket. Most churches are actually a 501 C 3 tax exempt business and teach what people want to hear. if you watch a lot of TV and never read the Bible, this book is not for you. The main complaint I have with this author is that he misidentifies the woman of "Mystery Babylon"There is physical babylon and there is "spiritual babylon.Rev 18:21 - And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all. ...........Rev 18:24 - And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.Spiritual babylon was responsible for the BLOOD of PROPHETS.Rev 16:6 - For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy.Rev 17:6 - And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.Mystery Babylon killed the prophets IF you believe the Bible...Jesus speaking Luke 13:33 - Nevertheless I must walk to day, and to morrow, and the day following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem.for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem. How plain is that from the mouth of Jesus?Jesus again - Matthew 23:37 - O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!Do you believe Jesus or commentaries? If you are a true follower of Jesus and want bible truth with lots of Bible references just know how to identify from the Bible where the beast shall rule from. This is an easy to read book written so anyone can understand. It is not filled with Bible College Theological jargon. The author has done his research of the entire Bible, both old and new testaments. he has done research along with other authors and scholars references and history, all laid our plainly and simply. You shall not be disappointed reading this book and the holy Scriptures.Compare what is taught in "Church businesses" with what is taught in the Bible pointed out in this book. By the way I have an earned master's degree in the Bible from a Baptist Bible College. That is six (6) years of formal Bible study, not counting the numerous studies on my own. I also attended a Florida State Public College for two years in a business program. Turn off the TV and spend a few hours reading the Bible and ignore the few errors in this book and know the future glory of the coming king.

Do you believe in ghosts? When doors and windows open on their own, when footsteps echo down an empty hall, when shadows move in the darkness and voices whisper when no one is around...what is going on? These are the experiences that stick with us, frighten us, incite our imaginations, and, ultimately, connect us to the past. Skeptics and believers alike are sure to be captivated by author David J. Schmidt's case study of Point Loma Nazarene University, a private Christian college in California that is filled with tales of poltergeists and apparitions. Originally built by a mysterious group of enigmatic Occultists known as the "Theosophists," the college is said to be haunted by the group's leader, Madame Tingley. Schmidt's retelling of these chilling stories both terrifies and lifts the shroud of mystery behind the hauntings as he compares them to other spectral stories from around the world. In coming to understand the ghosts of one college, the author hopes to broaden our understanding of hauntings as a worldwide phenomenon. You are invited to join him in his search...if you dare.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Catered to believers and non-believers alike. By Tom Painter It can be incredibly difficult to find books revolving around the somewhat precarious subject of 'ghosts' that can grab my attention. More often than not, even if you are a 'paranormal enthusiast' (which frankly, I wouldn't consider myself to be), most will have you rolling your eyes or slamming the text shut after the first few paragraphs explain how Joe Bloggs felt 'a bit funny' after walking past a cemetery one evening after a few pints at the local establishment.Holy Ghosts by David J. Schmidt caters to every reader. He doesn't ask the reader to suspend their disbelief, aware of the fact that not everyone will open the book already believing in paranormal abnormalities. Yet, his tone is also respectful to audiences who may already believe in another realm, and are looking to learn more about it. Schmidt caters to all audiences, and does so with ease, grace, and humility.Another triumph of this book is Schmidt's accomplishment of being able to reconcile the beliefs of both non-believing, and religious readers without alienating either party. Schmidt's research is profound, and he seems to have left no stone unturned in his extensive search of details and facts, and yet, at the end of it all he has not made a steadfast statement. He has the humility to present all of his collected facts without claiming to be in possession of them all. Cover to cover, a compelling and fascinating read. Needless to say, I recommend this book to everyone.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I opened this book as a boy, and closed it as a man (and before you say anything smart-alecky, I swear I'm a fast reader!) By cousinboobin In the world of men, there are show-ers, and there are growers. In the world of writers, there are show-ers, and there are tellers. I've seen David J. Schmidt naked, and as a man, I hope to God he's a grower. But I've also read this book, and as a writer, by-God he's a show-er!Here David J. Schmidt presents a modern-day "Odyssey" through the history of the Theosophists, with himself in the Odysseus role, stepping down from the mast on which he fought off the temptations of the Sirens' song that got the better of his fellow men. But BEHOLD--he steps into frame and dons Elton John glasses like Arnold in Terminator 3 while blasts a sweet-as-saccharin pop song by none other than Taylor Swift. David J. Schmidt has a blank space, baby, but he's writing your name in the snow! If it's scary stories you seek, this book has the goods to shrink your manhood like David J. Schmidt's. But if you're like me and it's intellectual manna you seek (and if for some reason the Entourage movie didn't slake your thirst), wait until the fourth part, where the author-turned-journalist faces the very people whose beliefs and ways of life he's been scoffing at and finds the heart in the maw of the beast we call Faith. You'll say, "God, this book has everything ... except a drawing of the Prophet Muhammad." But then--BAM!--page 284! So get this book. Read this book. And tell a friend about this book. It will open your eyes ... and you might just be too scared to close them at night.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Holier Than Ghosts By bookworm Holy Ghosts by David Schmidt it not just a book of scary stories, though it does not disappoint there. Schmidt did his research and the leg work required to track down the true meanings behind the stories, rumors and superstitions revolving around the historical Point Loma property. He sees his initial hypothesis through to the end of the book where he discovers that more holy than ghosts are the real living, breathing people with all their fears, desires of the flesh, and pounding hearts and sweaty palms. In short, bodies matter, despite the contradictions found in our cultural belief system, influenced alike by both the early New Age movement in the Theosophists with their mind-over-matter mantras and the Evangelical movement within Christianity with its belief that this earth and our bodies here do not matter because believers will escape into a heaven in the sky. Holy Ghosts explores these issues from a unique local point of view and challenges the believer and non-believer alike.

Most info can be found on the internet, that is true but I never really knew much about St. Expedite until Baal Kadmon wrote this book. Since I was reading other books by this author, I stopped and read this book on this incredible Saint. I am very surprised by quick results. Not everything was answered but what wasn't answered is shrouded from me for now. I understand. I have prayed to St. Expedite three times and so far my results have been quick. Thank you St. Expedite. I will continue learning about St. Expedite and invoking his name.

By Michelly and Jose I love how this book goes to the point without getting too theological or philosophical. It's short, nice, and sweet without complicated rituals, just some prayers, candles, and suggestions as offerings.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Another great series!!!! By Jewels-LVIUTAH I loved Holly Anna in the first book, and after reading the second one, I love her even more. She is totally someone I would want to be friends with. I loved this book. It was full of action and excitement. Holly Anna seems to find herself in trouble like Gabby from the Squeaky Clean Series. It got me thinking maybe there will be a lot more books in this series and I like that idea! Holly is forced to make some really tough decisions and has to face them alone. It shows her true strength and her love for Chase! After all she went through in the first book it was tough to see her go thru so much again but she was strong and persevered and I was glad she got a happy ending! As always Christy's books are amazing!NOTE: I was gifted this book by the Author in exchange for a honest review!

By Sue Smith tchr2be I received this book as a gift from Christy Barritt.Holly Anna finds herself and those she loves in danger if she doesn't follow the directions of some mysterious man that hides in the shadows. She must deceive the ones she loves in order to keep their lives safe. Not good at deceit, can she convince those she loves that she is behaving in this out of character way because she wants to? Can she find a way to deceive the mysterious shadow man into thinking she broke up with her boyfriend as he directed without really doing so? Can she keep up the deceit long enough to keep herself and those she loves alive and figure out who the mysterious Shadow Man is? Pick up the book today and find out for yourself.

I have fallen in love with Holly and Chase! What a great couple! I love the way the author has developed the characters in this series. In this second installment, Holly is forced to do the one thing that will break her heart; she must break up with the love of her life or face his death at the hands of a mysterious killer. As this man manipulates her life by threatening everyone she loves, she has to keep it all a secret, plan for her sister's wedding, deal with the riot breakouts in her city and try to figure out who this man is and what he is up to.

In After We Die, philosopher Stephen T. Davis subjects one of Christianity's key beliefs―that Christians not only will survive death but also will enjoy bodily resurrection―to searching philosophical analysis. Facing each critique squarely, Davis contends that traditional, historic belief about the eschatological future is philosophically defensible. Davis examines personal extinction, reincarnation, and immortality of the soul. By juxtaposing two systems of salvation―reincarnation/karma and resurrection/grace―Davis explores the Christian claim that humans will be raised from the dead, as well as the radical Christian assertions of Jesus' resurrection, ascension, and long-anticipated return. Davis finally addresses Christian thinking about heaven, hell, and purgatory. The philosophical defense of Christianity's core beliefs enables Davis to render a reasonable answer to the eternal question of what happens to us after we die. After We Die is essential reading for teachers and students of philosophy, theology, and Bible, as well as anyone interested in a reasoned analysis of historic Christian faith, particularly as it pertains to the inevitable end of each and every human being.

After I Die By Johnny Wilson Since After We Die: Theology, Philosophy, and the Question of Life after Death has philosophy in the title and since author Stephen T. Davis is a professor of philosophy, I expected more reasoning and less preaching in this volume. To be sure, I enjoyed After We Die because, after all, most of us love to read people who generally agree with us, but I was disappointed that he didn’t address more of the philosophical issues of those who don’t agree with traditional Christianity. It’s fair enough that he asserts, quite properly, that “ultimate questions” cannot be properly answered by the scientific method (p. 2). It is also proper that he identifies the problem of personal identity as a critical feature of the problem (addressing possible solutions as the “memory criterion,” “bodily criterion,” and the “duplication objection”—pp. 19-20).Yet, it seems that Davis moves very quickly from it seems reasonable or it seems possible to “I believe.” His philosophical method is most helpful when he shreds the assertion by Epicurus and the Stoics that, “When I am not dead, my death is of no concern to me.” Davis argues quite effectively that it is precisely when we are not dead that we are most concerned about what death shall bring (p. 22). He fairly observes that Epicurus was so concerned about knowing by experience that he assumed that what we have not (or have not yet) experienced is not relevant. It doesn’t take a lot of effort to observe in modern discussion and in the arts that this is not the case. A lot of people worry about death.Frankly, I very much appreciated Davis’ summary of what he called “The Lifestyle Argument against the Existence of God.” Some will consider this arrogant or whimsical since it is seldom verbalized, but often implied (as, for example, in Bertrand Russell’s infatuation with Alice Whitehead). Davis notes it as follows (p. 83): “1) I am not living and do not want to live the kind of life that God would want me to live if God existed. 2) Therefore, God does not exist.” The reason it isn’t verbalized is because it is illogical. What we want has nothing to do with whether something exists or not. My students may not want to complete a homework assignment, but the assignment exists whether they want to get the points or not. Davis rightly points out that this desire for autonomy and sense that no one has a right to interfere in anyone’s life (including God) is what makes religion so repugnant to many people today (p. 82).In dealing with the identity of persons, Davis very cleverly expresses the problem of resurrection with an illustration from a personal computer. Affirming Aquinas’ notion that one isn’t truly resurrected as a given person unless all of the “stuff” that makes up a person is restored/transformed, Davis shares the idea that he tears his personal computer apart into a multitude of pieces. Those pieces end up distributed in a variety of places. IF he goes to the trouble of tracing down all of those pieces and reassembling/repairing the computer with all of the original parts, it is easy to say that it is the same computer. If the computer is reassembled with parts from the same run of manufacturing (identical in form/function, but not precisely identical in reality), he cannot be sure (pp. 52-53). This reader wasn’t convinced by this argument—especially as Davis admits on the next page—since our entire cellular make-up is replaced every so many years and we still have continuity of personhood.I find it rather incredulous to espouse that God (given our de facto understanding of God as Creator/Sustainer/Redeemer) would be limited to the same materials as a given individual was created with in the first place. Both here and in Davis’ discussion of temporary disembodiment, I felt Davis could have been informed by quantum physics and the ability to identical particles to exist and act upon each other in different space-time coordinates (“entanglement”). Many of the logical problems with which he struggles will be addressed in such an understanding. In spite of my misgivings, this is a good book. I love phrases like, “…the will of God is the glue of the world” (p. 66) with its echoes of early Christian hymns (such as Colossians 1), his description of ascension as transformation into a heavenly dimension (or dimensions) (p. 79), his understanding of hell as being God allowing people to have their own way (p. 95), his citation of 1274 CE as the first official promulgation of “Purgatory” in the Catholic Church (p. 107), and his lovely illustration of “seeing God” in the heavenly dimension as being something like a baby intently trying to discern her/his mother’s face (p. 130).Those who seek to understand biblical teaching of life after death (with only a modicum of philosophical reasoning) will benefit from After We Die: Theology, Philosophy, and the Question of Life after Death. Those who are looking for a rigorous debate with non-Theistic perspectives will be largely disappointed.
