People affected by a loved one's addiction suffer silently in church pews. I was one of them. I'm Juliet. Sometimes I wish I could be someone else, with another name altogether, someone whose life is more comedy than tragedy. During the twelve years I was married to a cocaine-addicted Christian, I was overwhelmed with isolation and shame as I sat next to my ex-husband in church week after week. No one fathomed our family skeletons. How could I tell anyone? God stirred my spirit to seek personal healing and give voice to my reality. Through Him, I found freedom from silence and redemption for the life dreams I thought were forever lost. Same Dress, Different Day: A Spiritual Memoir of Addiction and Redemption chronicles my journey from victim to victor as I struggled to break free from codependency's suffocating cycle. I learned to see my Savior as the soul mate and provider my chemically dependent spouse could never be. God's healing grace is not only for the addicted, but also for the broken ones who love them.

I finished it 3 days ago and am still processing all the messaging it offers. I have purchased two additional books for friends who will benefit from the author's wisdom! I read about 2 books a week and can't recall ever reading a book with such pointed eloquence. The words and imagery are beautiful while the story provides insights and lessons which are timeless and unremitting. I genuinely look forward to other books from this author because I learned so much from this read - this book taught me things I will never unlearn and know I will find myself re-teaching to others. Thank you for your courage, faith, and for sharing your story and relationship with God - with all your readers.

By Amazon Customer This is a wonderfully written, beautiful book that takes the reader through lost hopes, dreams and despair to revival restored hope, love and elation--Gods love and redemption. I found this gem right when I started to wake up from my own co-dependent denial in a crumbled, alcoholic marriage. It was quite literally a God-send, in His perfect timing, as it gave me strength and encouragement to make decisions in my life that would impact the lives of many. Every sentence seeped into my veins and poured into my broken soul as I related to Juliet's story in a profound way. Although the ending to my story is not finished yet, I know that I have a loving God that sees me and will continue seeing me through till the end.

Experience the morning homilies of Pope Francis and witness  how he continues to change the life of the Catholic Church. Shortly after seven in the morning, Pope Francis gives a brief homily in the little Vatican chapel of Saint Martha, in front of an audience that is always different: gardeners, office workers, nuns and priests, as well as a growing group of journalists. It is a set appointment, and in some ways a revolutionary innovation, where a pope speaks to everyone, off the cuff, without any written text, as he would have done as a parish priest. Encountering Truth is a collection of highlights from these homilies from March 2013 to May 2014. Along with summaries by Radio Vaticana (who recorded and transcribed the homilies) and commentary by Father Antonio Spadaro, SJ, these reflections provide moments of inspiration, simplicity, and a glimpse into the papal world very few ever get to experience.

About the Author

POPE FRANCIS is the first Latin American to be elected to the chair of Peter. Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he was ordained as a priest in 1969. He served as head of the Society of Jesus in Argentina from 1973 to 1979. In 1998 he became the archbishop of Buenos Aires, and in 2001 a cardinal. Following the resignation of his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, on February 28, 2013, the conclave elected Bergoglio, who chose the papal name Francis in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi.

Early every morning, Pope Francis celebrates a personal sort of Mass in the small Saint Martha chapel at the Vatican. The audience is made up of gardeners, nuns, cooks, office workers, and always changes. What doesn't change is that the pope gives his homilies without notes just as he did when he was a parish priest. This book features highlights from almost 200 daily homilies covering a year from March 2013 to May 2014.I was enthralled by Antonio Spadaro's introduction which has an in-depth look at how Pope Francis prepares, including what the pope thinks is important in contemplating and conveying the Word of God to the faithful. Spadaro also gives a "map" of the way Francis circles round various topics, engaging them from different angles as the liturgical readings progress day to day. That was a new idea for me, that to get a full sense of his teachings one must patiently look at them from day to day.I have been reading these homilies as daily devotionals and can testify that the "circular" approach is true. As one works through the liturgy with Francis, one begins to see the way he backs up and tilts his head for different angles on the material we've heard so many times that we take it for granted.========"The hunt for the only treasure that we can take with us into the life after life is a Christian's reason for being. It is the reason for being that Jesus explains to the disciples in the passage from the Gospel of Matthew: "Where your treasure is, there also will your heart be." ..."The Lord has made us restless so that we will seek him, find him, grow. But if our treasure is a treasure that is not near the Lord, that is not of the Lord, our heart becomes restless for things that are no good, for these other treasures ... So many people, we ourselves are restless ... To have this, to get that, and in the end our heart becomes tired; it is never satisfied; it becomes tired, lazy, a heart without love. The weariness of the heart. Let's think about that. ..."========(I honestly never thought about St. Augustine's "restless until we rest in you" and "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Maybe it's obvious, but it wasn't to me.)About halfway through I began expecting to be surprised with each homily, even if only by a throw away line that illustrated the main point. The surprise was good because it made me rethink issues, look deeper into myself, and learn to know God a little better. To be honest, that's not usually the way I feel after reading Pope Francis's writing. So this is a rare find for me. (What can I say? Pope Benedict's style resonated with me from the get-go. It ain't Pope Francis's fault. I get that.)These are pretty short, about a page and a half usually, and each has the references for the scriptural readings on which Francis was commenting. This one's good for people who want to know Pope Francis better, need daily inspiration, want a good gift to give new Catholics, need to reinvigorate their relationship with God, and more. Definitely recommended.

Everyday homilies from Pope Francis By Stuart Dunn Encountering Truth is a collection of Pope Francis' daily homilies given from St. Martha's Chapel. Fr. Antonio Spadaro wrote the introduction for this 400 page tome. In it he explains the nature of the homilies, Pope Francis' method of delivery, as well as the people who normally attend these homilies, This sets the stage for the homilies and puts them in the correct light before reading them. There are 186 homilies in total with each of them approximately two pages long. They are presented chronologically from March 2013 to March 2014. At the end of every homily are the Scripture passages from that particular. I'd recommend reading the Scripture passages first for context, and then reading the homily. The homilies are vast and varying, and include topics such as hypocrisy, prayer for the Middle East, the idolatry of money. While I recommend reading every homily, you can just look at the Table of Contents and pick a topic that you think you need to read. One of the ones that spoke to me recently was "Never judge, never bad-mouth." In this homily, Pope Francis tells us, "Do not judge anyone because only the Lord can judge." Next, he tells us to "zip it," and if we have something to say, then say it to the person directly or someone who can help the situation, and not to everybody. Gossip is a big struggle of mine, and you can hear and read so eloquently on why it is harmful or bad for you and the people you are gossiping about. However, hearing it put so bluntly is what some people (myself included) need from time to time.Encountering Truth: Meeting God in the Everyday is one of the latest books from Image Books and sadly is among the list of last books Image will be publishing. (Read more here.) I'm not sure if we can change Image's mind, but if more Catholics read more and bought more books, we might could. So if you are looking for a solid read, straight from the mouth of Pope Francis, this is the book for you! So pick up a copy, and try and read at least one a day.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Worth Savoring & Sharing By Trixie L “Pope Francis insists on the dynamic element of the Church. In his homilies he is acting as a teacher of spiritual life, inciting us to move forward, to go to the existential peripheries, on mission. The way becomes the great metaphor of spiritual and ecclesiastical life. Only on the way is encounter possible. The way is, in this sense, the place of truth.” – Antonio SpadaroPope Francis has quickly become known for his approachable nature, his humility, and his relevant messages. His cheerful smile and undeniable warmth have made him a favorite among Catholics and non-Catholics alike. Encountering Truth captures these qualities in the most beautiful way with Pope Francis’ homilies from morning mass at Saint Martha’s chapel. Every morning, he observes mass with a devoted few; average people who are eager to join in the powerful celebration and gain inspiration from the pope. The simple homilies from these daily masses offer insight into Biblical passages as well as sound advice for those of us striving for faith in God in spite of the hectic pace of the modern world. Many of them have been collected in Encountering Truth so that devoted followers around the world can share in the wonders of the daily mass from a tiny Vatican chapel.Beginning with an engaging introduction by Antonio Spadaro, this book offers wisdom, insight, and most of all, reflections on scripture that are inspiring and comforting. With homilies focusing on grace, humility, courage, prayer, weakness, truth, and, hope, among others, this collection of 186 of Pope Francis’ brief homilies is an absolute gift. The brevity of each homily allows for a brief reading when there is time or a more in-depth study along with the provided Biblical passages. There is no need to rush through this book reading each homily; indeed, it is so much more beautiful when each passage is savored and fully appreciated.

She shares specific, insightful skills that even the best communicator can benefit from. I appreciated the reminders and the things I hadn't considered before about how we communicate, as both speaker and listener. I really liked how she begins each day with a Bible verse and then she explains how to integrate that principle in our interaction with others.Get this book - you won't be disappointed!

She uses real world examples that we all can relate to in order to emphasize how to achieve positive communication skills. I love how each chapter addresses a specific skill and gives practical tips on how to develop those skills and reinforces it all with scripture. This would be a great resource for a women's bible study as there is a workbook available too!

It's a beloved tale: young David rises from the obscurity of the shepherd's field to seize the throne of Israel. But what is often forgotten is that as David walked away from Samuel with the anointing oil still dripping from his head, his royal destiny would not be fulfilled for over twenty years. Drawing from the examples of David and his own experiences, Joshua L. McElhaney speaks to the heart of the young minister. Using illustrations from the life of one of Israel's greatest kings, he demonstrates the importance patience, trust, and submission in developing godly attitudes and strong ministries. In the journey of this book, you will see how the successes, influence, and greatness of David's kingship weren't defined by how he handled the throne. His achievements came from how he handled the cave... Published by Kindom Publisher (.com)

Scott Ingram Joshua McElhaney has written an excellent book for those of us in, and those looking towards, Christian ministry as a full-time vocation. The calling of God on the life of an individual does not work the same way as a professional career or climbing the corporate ladder. Instead we are called to humble ourselves, serve anywhere we can, and honor those in leadership above us until God promotes us in His timing. Using the life of Israel's King David as his example, Joshua teaches us that our focus on the journey from cave to palace cannot be one of self-promotion. Instead it is about going deeper in our prayer life, developing our character and integrity, and growing in our relationship with the Lord through His Word and in the Holy Spirit. This will be a book I recommend to the men and women I disciple in ministry for years to come.

The influence of Zen Master Ikkyu (1394-1481) permeates the full field of medieval Japanese aesthetics. Though best known as a poet, he was central to the shaping and reshaping of practices in calligraphy, Noh theater, tea ceremony, and rock gardening, all of which now define Japan’s sense of its cultural tradition. Ikkyu is unique in Zen for letting his love of all appearance occupy him until it destroys any possibility for safety or seclusion.  In his poetry, he turns the eye of enlightenment to all phenomena: politics, pine trees, hard meditation practice, sex, wine. A lifelong outsider to religious establishments, Ikkyu nonetheless accepted Imperial command to rebuild his home temple, Daitoku-ji, destroyed in the civil wars. He died before that project was complete. The poems in this collection express the unborn bliss of Ikkyu’s realization and equally his devastation at the horrors of this world. They are peopled with ancient Chinese poets, cantankerous Japanese Zen Masters, contemporary warlords, and his lover Mori, a blind musician who lived with Ikkyu the last eleven years of his life. All of this is his Buddhism. His awakening outshines the small idols of reason, emotion, self, desire, doctrine, even of Buddhism itself.

J Penick "If, when I die, I arrive in the Manjusri's Pure Realm, and you're not there, I'm leaving," said Ikkyu to his dying lover Mori. This is one of the most extraordinary and valuable books about the great Zen Master Ikkyu. It is an exploration of Ikkyu's vision where lineage, passion, culture and realization unfold inseparably in unending love. Moving easily between worlds of Buddhadharma and worldly histories, Kidder Smith and Sarah Messer have made a gift to every practitioner everywhere.

This Ikkyu is Clearly Better than No Ikkyu By Son This is, for most intents and purposes, the second book available to the general public of translations of the 15th century Japanese coyote poet, Ikkyu, not counting one popular book of idiosyncratic tranliterations. A brief description of what you get: 50 poems. This is better than nothing. The translators have made a curious decision to build the notes and annotation into the main text, like an introduction. So, in way, it's like Aitken's book on Basho, Zen Wave. Although, the introductions here are admittedly non-linear. Ikkyu's poetry is written in the Chinese style, which is founded on many allusions, so there is a method to this madness. Another curious decision is the refusal to translate the Japanese word furyu, which has elegant Chinese references and eremetic Japanese ones, and Ikkyu's personal reading as well. So, again, there is a method here. And precedent with such terms as the Japanese wabi sabi and Chinese wu wei. On this decision, I'm not a fan. The word stands out like sore skull, and is almost impossible to pronounce in English. Like cue, except an r instead of a c. Yes, poems can't be truly translated, but that's what you're doing. It will come to you if you silently wait. But that's neither here nor there. Overall, the translations appear sound, and reveal Ikkyu for the self-confident one in the world he is. At this moment, I prefer Stevens' Wild Ways, but that could change.
