In a post-apocalyptic world, two students discover that the worst thing about searching for the truth is actually finding it. After a nuclear war has ravaged the planet, children of the few survivors are sent to renowned scientist Dr. Parkman and his underground facility, Parkman Institute of Science and Solutions, to learn, create, and test the latest technologies until they turn 18 and are sent back to the surface to help rebuild society. Balt and Zoe, 16-year-old students, have begun to realize something is amiss when Zoe is given a glimpse of an entirely different reality during a freak accident, one completely foreign to what Parkman has always described to his students. With the help of Balt and his midterm robotics project, the talkative head of an A.I. called Smith, the three devise a plan to escape the institute and travel through the ruins of the old labs to get to the surface. As they draw closer to their destination, they begin to see that their biggest threat might be each other. The old lab is full of secrets, and some answers are perhaps better left buried.

Surfacing, by Mark Magro

From School Library Journal Gr 6–10—Twins Valentine and Malcolm moved to their grandmother's town, Emmett's Bluff, with their father after losing their mother to cancer. Both freshmen are understandably withdrawn but are doing far better than their author father, who stays mostly secluded. Mal is fascinated by a mysterious house across the street with no doors, and the town seems rife with strangeness: disappearances, deaths, and unexplained lightning storms that come and go unpredictably. When Mal investigates the strange house, he is attacked and threatened by a shadowed man and then finds a strange pocket watch on the ground. The tension escalates when the twins and some new friends go for a hike and end up injured in a surprise lightning storm. Val finds the pocket watch in Mal's room and discovers its time-traveling capabilities. But the mysterious man's identity and mission send the group (with some new allies) into a confrontation with extremely powerful forces. The action (and writing) seems slow to start, including characterizations. By the end of the novel, however, Dalton has found his stride, characters are fully realized, and the conclusion will leave readers wanting more. This is the first in a planned trilogy. VERDICT Sci-fi fans will gobble this one up and be waiting impatiently for the next.—Kelly Jo Lasher, Middle Township High School, Cape May Court House, NJ

Review "As a teacher of adolescents, Magro knows how to create a fast-paced story that will appeal to teenagers. He weaves in humor and fearful scenarios simultaneously, leaving the reader anticipating the next twist in the story." —VOYA Magazine

This book deals with themes of trust, morality, friendship, and identity as two young prodigies try to escape from an underground science institute to explore the post apocalyptic world. This book is fast paced and filled with adventure and introspection—not to mention some earth-shattering twists! I thoroughly enjoyed both Magro's voice and the story he has woven. Definitely worth a reread!

Magro spends plenty of time developing characters By Jordan Wright Surfacing is a wild ride--in the best way. Magro spends plenty of time developing characters, even Smith the A.I. (my personal fave), and yet the plot is always moving forward and twisting sideways. Fresh, exciting, wonderful read.

Two humans and one A.I. leave their underground home after questioning the ethics and motives of their teachers. The flight up through several levels of the old abandoned research institute brings them face-to-face with external dangers and internal demons. Told through duel point-of-views, I enjoyed experiencing the very differing perspectives of Balt and Zoe. Several twists during the escape kept me engaged and flipping pages. A definite five-star debut novel!
