By Mark Newbold Professor Godwin has written a epoch making work on the history of religion in America that is remarkably good! Focusing on those groups that sprang from or intersected with the burned over, hallowed ground district of upstate and western New York. The sacred traditions, religious movements and leaders of these often forgotten sects are examined in rich detail. Placing the foundations of those groups in a historic perspective with the interdependent elements that lead to their development and often the appeal of these groups and the motivation of followers that affirmed the teachings.The examination of these traditions proves that America in its relatively short history has been host and home to a rich spiritual mystery tradition. The array of sects examined proves the spiritual diversity unique to this country, demonstrating that the recent cults that find fertile ground in California are neither unique to that location or of recent creation. Spiritual renegades have been with us since the earliest days.A sample list of topics examined in a book may be a disservice to that book, but in this case my desire is to provide a small insight into the myriad topics, characters, influences and traditions explored: Shakers, Quakers, Native Americans, Masonic, Andrew Jackson Davis, (a progenitor to Spiritualism and Edgar Cayce), Utopian Social experiments, Freethought, Theosophy and its influence on many people and groups, including the Oz books. Hollow Earth theorists, Elbert Hubbard, Feminism, and the Arts & Crafts movement round out the book.This study is one I personally had hoped would eventually be written, and for those students of American religious history, sociology, folk life and psychology, we have cause to celebrate with the astute guide of Joscelyn Godwin along this scenic panorama.

By Ol' Jon I believe Joscelyn Godwin writes the most interesting and valuable histories of esotericism available today. I wish I could afford all his books! This one is as fascinating as the rest, with different and profound perspectives on Joseph Smith, the Fox sisters and many others you may not have heard of. As usual, there is a superb bibliography. If you are familiar with SUNY print-on-demand books, this will be no surprise to you: the font is still slightly smaller than optimum, but not unreadable. The binding is probably adequate for moderate-term use (have your local print shop spiral-bind it for long-term use). And, best of all, a human being seems to have proofread the book, rather than just using spell check! If this book appeals to you, and you know who you are, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it. I can't imagine you being disappointed.
