Review "Keri Mae's confessions of trying to stay present and attentive, grateful and hope-filled, are lively, witty, and just plain fun. She helpfully diagnoses pressing and distracting temptations of our day and spells out her humble experiments in living life more abundantly. She inspires my resolve to choose the good life." --Arthur Boers, pastor and award-winning author of six books, including, Living Into Focus: Choosing What Matters in an Age of Distractions; Associate Professor and R. J. Bernardo Family Chair of Leadership at Tyndale Seminary. "Keri's story is refreshing as she gives a candid and vulnerable account of her journey from a life of digital comatose to an awakening and rediscovery of the deep satisfaction of being present with the people around you. She blows the lid off a lonely craze that fosters vicarious living and superficial connections that are a mile wide and laptop deep. This book is not just for blogging moms but anyone who might have lost sight of what is truly important in relationships with family, and community, and with God."--Phillip Telfer, pastor and producer of Captivated; president of Media Talk 101"...Keri candidly relates her painful and humbling experience being tangled in the web of the online world and the surprising, unquenchable desire for media presence. Her story is at once revealing and instructive--the resulting fruit of her trials highlight the value and importance of being undistracted, available, and deeply Present here and now. This book may help you identify the source and spotlight where you've gotten derailed in your life and relationships and will offer you the encouragement and tools you need to be Present."--Pamela Spurling, blogger; The Welcome Home"...a gift of beauty and grace...Her elegant passages and gentle voice had me leaning in with a quiet spirit and soul so that I could listen closely, glean wisdom, and be refreshed. Reading Present was almost like having a conversation with Lamar over tea...and as I evaluated my own habits her words never made me feel scolded or put down. She didn't finger point but instead left me feeling reflective and nurtured while making decisions on how I can be more present in my own life. A beautiful book."--Elizabeth Byler Younts, author; The Promise of Sunrise Series."Keri's raw honesty and poignant portrayal of her own journey to a simpler, more purposeful life in a technology- driven society is riveting. Few books have moved me as much to ponder what life really is and how I'm living it. She challenges me to reject falling for the pseudo-reality on my screen and make room to embrace real life more completely, ultimately transforming my relationships and myself. The health of our generation depends on taking seriously the admonition Keri offers in a non-condemning, powerfully- beautiful style."--Kelly Crawford, blogger; Generation Cedar

By Sara I have the wonderful privilege of knowing Keri and receiving a book to review for free. I love how poignant and candid she is telling of her struggles with the internet and learned how she needed to become more "PRESENT" with the people around her. I couldn't help but think that the Lord used Keri to get my attention with my own "addiction" to go into a world of no reality. To ignore all that is/was around me and drown out the very thing I was supposed to be giving my attention to. Keri has a gift of bringing to light questions that I believe everyone should be asking of their own in regards to how they spend time in our technological world now. I, myself, have been convicted of how much time I spend just on one particular social media sight. I try and justify my time telling me I am catching up with friends/family when in reality I want to escape some of my days activities. After reading Present, I have made it a point to connect with people via phone as opposed to social media as much as I can. There is something after all, about a phone where you can still hear a person's sigh, or even know they are smiling, as opposed to typing those famous letters LOL. Years ago we were of a people that went and sought each other out for company, face to face. Now we are just a cyber space second away from connecting with a person and yet I truly believe it can be so much more. I am very grateful to Keri and how the Lord showed her through her own experience and that she is able to show others, like me, just how controlling we can let social media be in our lives if we do not learn to control it. Sometimes it does take "unplugging" to come back to reality and to be "PRESENT".

There's nothing groundbreaking in the book, I feel like it's something we all know. But it is the author's personal story and well written. I agree that we are too dependent on social media etc. I'm not on any of the big sites, I miss out on a lot of "news". I've resorted to the fact that the people I felt close to before things like FB, are really not close friends at all. They all communicate by FB now, not even e-mail. I heard on a radio program once that we are "creating friendships a million miles wide and 2 inches deep". I thought that was VERY true of what's happening. I think WONDERFUL things can come of social media and online communities. But I do believe that many real life relationships are either neglected or abandoned in the meantime. I really resonate with the author's feelings of not wanting her children to see the back of her head all the time. I don't want my kids to see a "device/phone" in my hands at all times. I really do appreciate the reminder from Keri Mae's experience.

A Profound Gift for Readers By Isabel Gates “They were opportunities to ignore the mess under my own feet.” The call of the blog universe and the escapism of the online world, were powerful draws to author Keri Lamar, who was craving a more meaningful life. “Logically, I knew this wasn’t peace. It was deadening. And playing dead is not the same as walking in peace.” In Present, Keri does a masterful job at explaining and justifying the pulls she felt as a homeschooling mother of eight toward the blogging life, while wrestling with the deep loneliness she felt at times when the distraction of social media gradually began to take hold. On a heart level, she knew where the damage was originating. She lamented that she was not fully present in body, mind, and spirit for those she loved. A book of enlightening revelations and heart filled stories of the journey, I found I couldn’t put Present down. Ironically, once I finished the book, I wanted to keep reading. I bookmarked her blog, (http://www.ahappyhomemedia.com) where she occasionally posts, both for the joy of writing and for the gift she wants to give us as readers. I deeply appreciate the balance she's found. “Sharing, as it turned out, was not sharing, was never a trade of any kind. Blogging, tweeting, any writing at all, was giving. Gifting. That revelation changed my thinking.” Our online world is difficult at the best of times to navigate from the perspective of the human spirit. Keri’s journey in this book IS a gift. Her keen ability to step back and observe the results of her life choices with her deeply engaging writing style has a poignant meaning for us all.
