We suffer when we screw up, but we suffer doubly when we conceal our screwing up from each other and from ourselves. As the good folks in AA say, "we are only as sick as our secrets."We all like to think of ourselves as 'good people,' but that's only half the story--and to tell only half the story is to live only half our lives. Standing Naked Before God is a book about telling the whole story--one amazing, vibrant progressive Christian church's countercultural practice of public confession of sin. Every week, millenials, Gen-Xers, Boomers and even young teens at First Church Somerville UCC, the church Baskette pastors in hipster Boston, take the stand to tell about a time they messed up, broke bad, or made Jesus want to cry. The book is part how-to, part devotional reading, part how-to, and part anthology of stories of personal loss, vulnerability, failure and redemption--stories to make you laugh and cry in equal measure. It's a book, in our tell-all culture, that is not about baring our souls to get more likes or pageviews: it's about putting our wounds into the service of others. Telling the stories of our sins in a sacred setting means learning to see how God has entered those stories, turning even our failures and flaws to goodness and grace. All we have to do is show up--and tell the truth. All of it.This is a book for spiritual seekers of any stripe who love true stories, and who might be aching for a spiritual practice that will move them toward a wholehearted, vulnerable and fully integrated life.

Review "Is confession good for the soul? The answer is yes, as Baskette shows in this lively, moving report from the trenches of a parish church. She gives a sense of how worship can change lives and how individual confession can become a powerful corporate blessing." ~Peter Hawkins, Professor of Religion and Literature, Yale Divinity School"When the pastor of a church that almost died in the ambulance--but then danced out of the ER surrounded by drag queens, young adults and a marching band--tells you there's one thing they did that made all the difference, you probably should listen. With wit and a solid grounding in theology and psychology, Baskette tutors us in the ancient ways of confession and assurance, and gives examples of her congregation's God-talk that will break your heart, stitch it back together, and make you long to stand up and confess." ~Quinn Caldwell, All I Really Want: Readings for a Modern Christmas"A brave, bold and biting book. Don't crack it open unless you are ready to be cracked open yourself. Much more than a scolding call to confession, this book is a love-soaked invitation to tell the truth in the pews." ~Lillian Daniel, author of When Spiritual But Not Religious is Not EnoughIn the age of social meda we have grown accustomed, even inured, to a culture where people are more exposed, if not more vulnerable and real. This has created an expectation that no community can be authentic without a level of genuine honesty and vulnerability. Too often, the church is the last place that can be found. Baskette offers us a new/ancient way for the church to become the type of community that our culture seeks and needs. ~Michael S. Piazza, Agile Church ConsultingBecause Baskette sees the Christian life as a heroic undertaking rather than a weekend hobby, she expects her church members to do hard things, like stand in front of their friends and neighbors and trust them with their truest stories, revealing their most authentic, wounded selves. Call it what you will, this practice inspires the kind of holy intimacy that binds people together, transforming them from a congregation of fellow travelers into a living, breathing body of Christ. That makes this book good news.~Shawnthea Monroe, The Christian Century
About the Author Molly Phinney Baskette is, in no particular order, a mother, spouse, recovering workaholic, cancer survivor, adventurous home cook. And oh right: she's also the lead pastor of the quirky, loveable, burgeoning community of First Church Somerville UCC in Somerville, MA, recently dubbed the hippest city in America. She blogs about ministry, motherhood, cancer and whatever else can't fit into her Sunday sermons at revmolly.tumblr.com. Her new blog, realgoodchurch.tumblr.com, spells out just how her church pulled out of the financial and numerical nosedive that has sent many other mainline Christian churches into a death spiral. And, when time permits, she has fun making sense of the big theological questions little kids ask at whatisgodfor.tumblr.com.

Helpful for church life in the 21st century, and personal devotional reading. Half of the book is individual confessions. These personal stories are most helpful when one takes the time to ponder the current story before reading the next.

In a postmodern (post-denominational and post-Christian?) world, we are learning that we can no longer "play church" in the sense of just opening our doors, offering a warm smile, so that people can have a place to escape from their Monday-Saturday lives with a little spiritual respite. People today are looking for authentic community. Baskette shows us that the best way to build community is by allowing people a safe space to bare their souls before God and one another. This book is a portrayal of authentic community/church. It is a "witness" to what the church could look like in every setting. Molly is a clear writer precisely because she opens herself up to her reading audience as well. Don't miss her own confessions in the pages of this book! This is a "how to" book in a sense that isn't at all trite. This book is seriously transformational for individuals and communities.

By Adam I This is a book for people with a genuine love for being the church, telling the truth, and doing both at the same time. This book not only gives situational context and theological grounding for a personal liturgical expression of confession, it also provides the how-to and examples. For most churches, the mode of public confession promoted by the book will be not only novel but scary. The comfortable mode of doing church is, well, comfortable. I, for one, can't wait to try out the techniques offered here. Kudos to First Church Somerville for being brave.
