Review From Methodist Recorder February 2016 "Of the making many books, there is no end, and much study is a weariness of the flesh", the writer of Ecclesiastes 12. 12 reminds us, somewhat regretfully. It is certainly true that, as the average age of human lifespan lengthens in the more affluent parts of the world, there are more and more books written about spirituality and aging, though fortunately not all are wearying! One book which is certainly not in that category is Moments to Remember: Ignatian Wisdom for Aging by Carol Ann Smith and Eugene F Merz (New City Press, GBP10.95), intended to offer readers guidance and help in reflecting on their experience of aging. What appears to be a simple little book actually, on further exploration, turns out to be well-constructed and more complex. Sister Carol Ann Smith of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus and Father Eugene F Merz, of the Society of Jesus, bring the fruits of their own experience of spiritual accompaniment and retreat-giving to a wider audience. The book is divided into four parts, the first being "As years unfold, a glance at the journey". Part two is entitled "Ignatian wisdom for living", which includes a helpful introduction for those to whom the work of St Ignatius of Loyola may be new. It also introduces the idea of a prayer of colloquy, a conversation with Jesus, with some suggestions for how individuals can take this further. The seasons are the focus of part three, with short sections each for spring, summer, autumn and winter. Part four suggests ways of sharing one's own story, and has ideas for prayer, conversation and group discussion, and closing prayers. This opens up the possibility that the book may also be used for study in a fellowship group. The book is dedicated to the parents of both the authors, "who taught us a grateful love for the world and hope for its children". These qualities are at the heart of the book. The preface expresses the belief that we are providentially given "companions on our journey home to God" and hopes the book will be such a companion. Readers are advised to ponder their life experiences quietly and prayerfully, and appropriate questions are provided to prompt thoughtful reflection. Extracts from the Bible and from other prose and poetry sources are included. Among those commending Moments to Remember: Ignatian Wisdom for Aging is Martin Sheen, a Christian who is also an actor and social activist, who appreciates its encouragement and insight for those who are aging. "It will be on my shelf and in my heart for years to come", he writes. He will not be alone in such appreciation. I would recommend this book for those who would like a little treasure trove of questions to ponder, readings on which to reflect, and inspiration to explore one's spiritual journey - both that already experienced and that which is yet to come. By Judith Lampard, a local preacher in the London Forest circuit. --Methodist Recorder February 2016, Judith Lampard

Sr. Carol Ann Smith and Father Gene Merz wrote this book in such a way that it gently calls the reader in to meditate and reflect upon the expanse of one's life and see that none of it was wasted, and that God has been with us every step of the way from the beginning. The format this beautiful book is organized allows one to spend as much time that is needed to pray and meditate through each section. It offers a constant invitation for the soil of the heart to open up as wide as possible to receive the seed the Sower is so generously scattering in every moment, even when we "miss it". I plan to use this book in my personal life for years to come. I would most definitely recommend it to anyone who has come to a new clearing after a long, full life, and senses even the faintest whisper from the Spirit saying, "Come, sit with me."
5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Remembering time By S. S. Otto Thought-provoking suggestions for reflection in an inviting format. Like their other books, this one touches the heart and brings Scripture into the moment. Since I am among the aging, it has been excellent for me, and I have passed it on to "old friends."

It invites reflection and gratitude for the gift of life and the gifts God has given us, enriching us, drawing us to Gods-self. This book offers opportunities to own the blessings that each of us is in our world. It is an invitation to appreciate aging and its gifts. I also find it healing in a culture that seems to want to reject the whole reality and process of aging. There is a wonderful variety of quotes, poems and reflections. It is not a book to quickly read. It is designed I think as a book with material to be pondered. I find "Moments to Remember" a book to that offers insights and treasures to "chew on". It is nourishing. i like the questions found in each section. I can imagine they would be great to use for spiritual conversation. I highly recommend "Moments to Remember" to anyone in their fifties or older. I am aware that this book is authored by two people, Sr Carol Ann Smith and Fr Eugene Merz SJ. I am wondering why only Sr. is mentioned in this listing. I have read other books co authored by these two authors and find they make a good team.
