Although many books have been written on the Laws of Thought, very few combine these laws with Spiritual Truth. “Metaphysics for everyone” is Conny Méndez’ English translation of her bestseller “Metafísica al alcance de todos”, which helps the reader take control of his life by harnessing his inner power and directing it through constructive channels, proving that "The Force is with You". Conny Méndez always believed that fundamental Spiritual, Philosophical and Metaphysical Truths should be stated in the plainest and simplest language, so that even any intelligent child could grasp them. Unfortunately, most writings in these great subjects have been very obscure, and full of technical jargon; but the author felt that to be totally unnecessary. Hence, the author tried as far as possible to avoid the use of technical terminology, and never employs a word of three syllables where a word of two syllables will do. Here again is another reason for the rousing success of this powerful "Book of Revelations".

God is high and holy, but he is also near to his people. It can seem difficult at times for us to grasp how our King can also be our Friend. Perhaps no book of the Bible better demonstrates the desire to understand God than Psalms. Running the entire gamut of emotions, the writers of these great poems sought to draw near to God and both honor and know him. In doing so, they aid us in expressing our hearts and minds to God.Hymns of the Heart walks the reader through 35 of these psalms, looking to the meaning of the original text while pointing to God’s majesty and glory. As you reflect on the Psalms, may your heart be drawn to the Lord and may you stand amazed at his love for his people.

Accessible guide to the Psalms By Sheep23 Hymns of the Heart: Discovering God in the Psalms by Adam FaughnHave you ever needed a guide to reading the book of Psalms in the Old Testament? Has it ever occurred to you that focusing on certain psalms will help you in your study of the Bible? Adam Faughn helps his readers get in the heart of the psalms as he looks at 35 of them in his new book, Hymns of the Heart: Discovering God in the Psalms. The book is designed to open up the prayer and worship book of the OT and help us discern the meaning for today.Adam gets into each psalm by looking at the structure, theology, and message of each psalm for today. With an appreciation for the historical context of each psalm, Adam weaves together scholarship, story and application that helps the reader understand each psalm in its context. With most chapters being around 10 pages, you can easily pick up the book and learn more about each of the 35 included psalms. One thing I really thought was done well in this book was Adam’s insistence in drawing out the emotional tenor of each psalm and how it has affected his own spiritual life. The psalms are certainly meant to push us toward various emotions from anger to joyous celebration all the way praising the God who made us.If you want an accessible guide to some of the Psalter, Adam’s book will encourage your faith. Thanks to BookCrash and Start2Finish Books for the copy this book in exchange for an honest review.

Comfort from Psalms By Gardenergal Hymns of the Heart written by Adam Faughn is a comprehensive analysis of the most beautiful songs in the Bible - the Psalms.I have always connected easily the Psalms, finding it easy to identify with the struggles and joys contained within each. Their relevance to everyday situations is, for me, a source of comfort. One can pretty much guarantee finding many moments to relate to while reading God’s responses, or not – as the case might be. The Psalms are collections of real people and real situations. It is why Adam’s book will be a blessing to anyone wanting to better understand these beautiful songs.Reading Adam’s book I was somewhat overwhelmed by his long explanations, but his intrinsic love of these delightful poems is apparent.I am not an academic, whereas Adam clearly is. His book is packed full of accounts of those by-gone times and could have lost me among his long interpretations, but my love of the Psalms kept my attention as I choose to learn more about them. The book covers thirty-five of the Psalms, with conclusions at the close of each chapter. One of the questions raised is, “Are you close to God?” I asked myself that same question.Do I choose Him in destitute times; downcast times; disturbing or directionless times? No, not always. Do you?I found the book long, nevertheless absorbing. I have favorites among the Psalms and I found some of them within the pages of Adam’s book, otherwise I might have been tempted to stop reading – and that would have been my loss.Well written and I certainly recommend it to anyone wanting to expand their knowledge and understanding of what the Psalms are all about.I received a free copy of this book from publisher Bookcrash in exchange for an honest review.

Burnham If you are looking for a deeper look into the heart of God, then consider studying the Psalms with Adam Faughn’s Hymns of the Heart. A good start for an individual Bible study, this book is sure to make you go deeper in your relationship with God.Faughn explores 35 of the Psalms in detail — verse by verse — including commentary from Biblical scholars and analysis of the original meanings of words. Each chapter is less than 10 pages long, allowing for the reader to complete a study of each Psalm in a day or two. Faughn introduces each study with a story and then painstakingly works through the verses expounding on key words and phrases. While each section within the chapter looks at the complete verses, the book does not include the Psalms in their entirety. I wish that the book had included them at the beginning of each chapter, or if that was not possible, the verses included by themselves instead of within the text. This is certainly just a personal preference; I did have my Bible close by to use as a guide. The book also does not include questions for personal reflection — it reads more like a lecture than a discussion — so I think this one is more for individual than group study.Audience: adults.(Thanks to BookCrash for a review copy. All opinions expressed are mine alone.)

Soon life’s pilgrimage will end. All children of God will face Jesus at His Judgment Seat. Will it be an awards podium, with some receiving more rewards, some less? What about negative reward? Is that a possibility? If so, what does it suggest about how we should live our lives here and now? The author deals with the largely neglected doctrine of rewards, warning from the Scriptures that our Judgment Seat verdict (positive or negative) will determine our place in His kingdom. He addresses numerous challenging questions, such as … • How is salvation of the soul distinguished from salvation of the spirit? • When Jesus warned, “What shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” was He speaking to the lost or to the saved? • Will all believers have equal standing in the age to come? • Does Outer Darkness really refer to Hell or could it have a bearing on saints? • Are all children of God automatically included as part of Christ’s bride? • Who will rule and reign with Christ? • Who are the overcomers in the New Testament and to whom do the rewards for overcomers apply? • How do we prepare to meet Jesus and hear the words, Well done?

This book is a great introductory text to the doctrine of rewards By Marty Cauley Hollandsworth has done a splendid job of communicating advanced topics concerning heavenly rewards in such a way that the general reader will have no problem understanding the material by simply reading his book: The End of the Pilgrimage. This book is a great introductory text to the doctrine of rewards. Indeed, I bought an extra copy to give to our pastor in hopes that he might consider using Hollandsworth’s book in this capacity for our church. As Hollandsworth explains, all believers have a regenerate spirit and will have a redeemed body, but not all believers are waging successful spiritual warfare in relation to the soul in order to experience the salvation of their souls at the Bema. Hollandsworth provides a solid foundation for waging this war successfully by learning to rely on the Holy Spirit’s presence in us and our position in Christ. He uses this spirit-versus-soul hermeneutic to explain how believers can be forgiven at one plane or level, but not at another plane or level, thereby easily answering questions that have confused many. His discussion of the outer darkness in relation to the Reward City will be easily-grasped by the novice. Even advanced readers will find his discussion interesting, as he makes some innovative suggestions in this regard concerning Jacob’s latter and why Matthew uses the phrase kingdom of the heavens. His assessment of Heb 12:23 even anticipates a conclusion that I have reached during the past year pertaining to the connection between the Reward City and outer darkens, but I have not yet put that analysis into print in my Misthological Models. Hollandsworth is on the cutting edge, therefore, in following the implications of his model to their logical and biblical conclusions. Moreover, Hollandsworth’s discussion of the second death will be helpful for my own Misthological Models. In these models, I have shown that soteric-mistholic litotes are subject to limited inversion. Not being hurt by the second death in Rev 2:11 is one such example. Writing at the popular level, Hollandsworth does not embroil himself in such technicalities, of course. Nevertheless, he does offer a plausible explanation that would be very attractive competing or complementary model to my own for this particular litotes. A Scripture index is included, making it an easy to reference resource.

By Sean Cowland I am very grateful for this book for a couple reasons. First, I believe that many Christians are not being taught properly concerning the Judgment Seat of Christ, if being taught it at all!Second, in struggling with some of the tough passages in scripture that this book tackles, such as "outer darkness", "Gehenna", the rewards mentioned to the seven Churches, to name a few... I have never really been satisfied with the direction many commentators have taken them to mean (Unsatisfying and still questionable in the end!).Hollandsworth , I believe, in this book is going to open up many people to new concepts that they may not have thought of or been taught before! There are a few concepts that he mentions that I am still studying and meditating on to come to a conclusion in my own mind about. However, many of the concepts he touches on have not only made sense to me, but have really opened the door in understanding other tough passages along the way! He does not just state what he believes but he backs it up at every turn with other scripture which really helps to bring it to light, and makes it tougher to just blow off as nonsense!I highly recommend this book to EVERY Christian!

We need to be reminded that we (all Christians) will one day stand before the Lord at the Judgment Seat to give account of our lives. Weather we will have the privilege of ruling and reigning with our Lord in His coming millennial kingdom depends on how we live our lives now. Pastor Hollandsworth has done a great job teaching "Kingdom" truths. These truths were preached many years ago, however, not to today's Christians.

Review "Came home from vacation to this beautiful book of the amazing children, men, and women with alopecia. So happy to be a part of this amazing project. The book documents the many lives alopecia has touched and how truly beautiful these human beings are on the inside and out." - Kimarie M. "I have to tell you that I'm very impressed and "MOVED" by your book... So happy that I got to you before end of conference and sale and got a copy. (So like me to wait to the last minute before closing up shop. - but I always seem to make it!) Reading it story and story and really absorbing the impact. Sincere KUDOS!" - Leo F.

About the Author After thirty seven years of having some form of alopecia areata, I finally met others who understood. I stopped feeling alone in my journey and began writing about my experience. I soon discovered who I was without hair. The book journey began when I realized there were more stories to be told. As a child, I yearned to know someone else who looked like me and understood how I felt. Head-On, Stories of Alopecia has become everything I would have wanted to see and read when I was first diagnosed. More about me...This is my indie-published, non-fiction debut. Thirty years ago, I unwillingly exchanged the steady California sunshine for the perpetual liquid sunshine of Washington State, and I now happily call Skagit Valley my home. I spend my time working with my husband, Cedar, in our re-purposing/salvage company, constantly reminding my children to pick up after themselves, and trying not to injure myself or teammates while playing competitive volleyball with my slightly disorganized and aging team. My love of Hawaiian music and strong desire to one day properly learn to hula dance are small ways I try to connect with my Hawaiian heritage. My biggest accomplishments in life are becoming a published author, building my home piece by piece, dismantling and re-purposing a 16,000 square foot horse arena, and the ability to stay married after doing all of these things together with my husband of 22 years.

By Tanya Huang I've had alopecia since I was 10 years old, and it's been a journey.I've met over a hundred people with alopecia from running a support group here in Vancouver, Canada. I can speak for myself and countless others, that the best cure for this unpredictable autoimmune condition is learning to love yourself as you are. When you do, you are happy whether your hair is all gone, partially gone, growing back awkwardly, or in remission! :) If you don't, you are stressed even when the hair has grown back, because you'd worry about the possibility of losing it at any time.I thought I'd be the last person to love my bald self. Not in a million years! Yet here I am, super amazed still about what happened. When I backtracked to understand what got me to open up and see myself differently, I realized it was from hearing inspiring stories of other people with alopecia. So this book does exactly this, except better. Instead of taking years to see yourself more positively by meeting inspiring people here and there, this book has so many inspiring stories (75 total), giving you condensed and diverse view of how other people with alopecia have coped and thrived.I like that the book has stories of men, women, kids, and parents' perspectives. Different ages, different parts of the world. There are celebrities too, which is always cool. Many role models in here!I love that the stories are incredibly well written by each person with alopecia, and photos are stunning! I attached a few photos for you to get an idea of what it's like inside. I like the organization of the book too, so I took a photo of the table of contents. The value you'll get out of this book is far beyond its price. Definitely get it. In the near future when you look back on this moment, you'll be happy that you did :)

I obtained a copy of this wonderful book from the author after hearing about it through Alopecia Support groups on Facebook. My son who is now 10, lost all of his hair when he was 7. Because it is so rare and because the disease is not life threatening, so little is still known or research conducted about this autoimmune disease. As a mother, it is so hard to process the why and hows and what to do. Because it is a visible disease and often misunderstood for cancer, it can be so isolating. From reading about the author to every single story in this book, my family doesn't feel alone. The stories are from all over the world and I know that my son has an incredible family of Alopecians out there ready to support him and deal with it together.

What a wonderful collection of stories of strong and brave individuals. Everyone faces some hardship in their lives but unless you've experienced living with hair loss, you can't really appreciate the daily difficulties that people endure. This collection of stories is so professionally put together with beautiful photography. One has to credit the author for the quality of this project. I would definitely recommend this book as a must read wither you are experiencing hair loss or not. Every time I read it, I can't help but admire the people that are highlighted in the book.

Philip Doddridge worked towards a united Nonconformist body that would have wide appeal, retaining highly cultured elements without alienating those less educated. His best known work, The Rise and Progress of Religion in the Soul (1745), dedicated to Isaac Watts, was often reprinted and became widely influential. It was through reading it, together with Isaac Milner, that William Wilberforce began the spiritual journey which eventually led to his conversion. It is said that this work best illustrates Doddridge's religious genius, and it has been widely translated. His other well-known works include: The Family Expositor (6 vols., 1739–1756); Life of Colonel Gardiner (1747); and a Course of Lectures on Pneumatology, Ethics and Divinity (1763). Doddridge also published several courses of sermons on particular topics.

The Rise and Progress of Religion in the Soul, by Philip Doddridge

About the Author DR. DODDRIDGE was born in London, June 26, 1709. He was of a consumptive habit from infancy, was brought up in the early knowledge of religion, and was left an orphan before he arrived at the age of 14. At 16 be made a profession of religion; at 20 commenced preaching the Gospel; and at 21 was settled over a small congregation, in an obscure village, where be devoted himself to the acquisition of useful knowledge with indefatigable zeal. At 27 he was removed to the pastoral care of the church in Northampton, where, for 22 years, amidst other diversified labors, he acted as an instructor of youth preparing for the ministry, having had under his charge, during that period, upwards of 200 young men. At the age of 37 and 38 he published two volumes of his Family Expositor; and about the age of 43 wrote "The Rise and Progress of Religion in the Soul." At 46 he published the third volume of the Family Expositor, and two Dissertations.--1. On Sir Isaac Newton's System of the Harmony. 2. On the Inspiration of the New Testament. In December, 1750, in the 49th year of his age, he went to St. Albans and preached the funeral sermon of his early patron and benefactor, Dr. Clark, in which journey he contracted a cold that laid the foundation for his death. In July, 1751, he addressed his flock for the last time from the pulpit; and having found all medical aid ineffectual, embarked, in October, for Lisbon, as the last resort in so threatening a disorder, at which place he died on the 26th of October, aged 49 years. He was not handsome in person; was very thin and slender, in stature somewhat above the middle size, with a stoop in his shoulders; but when engaged in conversation, or employed in the pulpit, there was a remarkable sprightliness in his countenance and manner, which commanded general attention.

Hopeman This book is a full, complete and honest examination of the human heart as it exists apart from God, lost in it's self-idolatry, rationalizations, and pretensious preferences. It is a straight on look at mankinds rebellion toward God exibited by a lifetime of non-nutritious indulgences at the preferred fleshly "slop" trough of our self-centered and entitled arrogant efforts and dawdlings. It is a compassionate and provacative appeal from one man saved by grace to the unsaved...to accept this unfathomable and precious gift of salvation which God offers through faith in Christ. An offer that He makes in tender compassionate love to all who will recieve it. The author extends to both the nominal professing believer and the most rabid sinner an opportunity to put aside pretense and take an honest look at oneself in the light of our holy and righteous God and Creator. He describes the gift of salvation as an exchange of abundant relational life in God, and that eternally, for the acceptace of the gift and repentance and turning away from sin. It is a look at the gift, the character of the Giver, and the choices to be made in our short pilgrimage on earth which will have direct affect the grace of our life now, the attitude of our dying and the way in which we each will enter into eternal life. in dying and in our eternal life. Eternity will be a comforting and joyfilled existence as worshippers and friends of God or it will be a terrible encounter with a righteous Judge and executioner who will not let the wicked and rebellious sinner go unpunished. He has observed our thoughts, motives and actions throughout our lifetime and cannot be decieved by our excuses and lies. He has given us freely every ability we have, and every good gift we have recieved and forborn with us in hope that we would turn to him. The book takes the reader through a rational consideration of the pro's and con's of this decision to be madewith an attitude of hope and words of truth and grace. Excellent in every way.

Geocaris Love puritan writers - they number what they are going to talk about at the beginning of the chapter, and then follow it exactly. This format helps when reading flowery king-james language because if you get lost you just go to the beginning of the chapter and read the synopsis of the number you are on to get back on track.I started in chapter #13 since I am already a believer, but the book addresses non-believers through devout Christians as it walks through the Christian life and exorts us to examine ourselves. No wonder this book influenced the likes of Spurgeon. Definitely recommended

Probably one of the best books ever written on christianity. Will read it again and again. The author of this book had a positive influence on C.S. Lewis. Read the book and you will see why.

Answers to 40 of the most common and difficult questions about baptism and communion Appropriate for the student and thoughtful layperson, 40 Questions About Baptism and the Lord’s Supper answers forty of the most common and most difficult questions about the two Protestant ordinances. There is significant diversity of views on these subjects and the skilled, evenhanded biblical analysis sheds lights on the many theological and pastoral considerations regarding baptism and communion. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are practiced by almost all Christian churches, but they disagree on the meaning, proper participants, even the proper names for these observances. This book includes the major theological issues (such as infant baptism, open and closed communion, and the nature of God’s activity in these celebrations), the views held by different denominations (from Roman Catholic to Lutheran, Reformed, Baptist, and others), and a number of practical issues (such as the proper age at which to baptize a child, the frequency with which the Lord’s Supper should be observed, and whether these two practices should be observed only in churches). This volume will be helpful to pastors, worship leaders, college and seminary students, and of interest to all Christians who want to grow in their understanding of these two basic Christian acts of worship. Each chapter is succinct and readable, with footnotes indicating additional sources for those who wish to go further.

Hammett explores the two ordinances of the Church, the Lord's Supper and Baptism, from a scholarly Baptist perspective.Review: As Hammett acknowledges in the beginning of the book, there is an irony found in the rites of the Lord's Supper and Baptism. Whereas these practices should bring about Christian unity, they have historically caused division among the universal Church.40 Questions About Baptism and the Lord's Supper does not try to reunify the Church, but it does spend quite a bit of time offering presentation of the various perspectives rather than an ongoing polemic against every non-Baptist understanding. I found this refreshing.Additionally, Hammett explores the terms for these rites (i.e. ordinances or sacraments) with a balanced perspective. Now, being an ordained Southern Baptist pastor, I generally find myself in agreement with Hammett's conclusions. I'm not a hard-nosed Baptist, though. My theological convictions don't arise from historical Baptist roots. And because of this, I found Hammett's approach to the viewpoints on Baptism and the Lord's Supper intellectually and biblically honest.I never got the sense that Hammett was out to prove the Baptist viewpoint, and demolish the Catholic, Lutheran and Reformed theologies. On the contrary, Hammett approached the rites looking for as much common ground as possible, and only offered his evaluations after the common ground was affirmed.I found the following questions of particular usefulness:- Are Baptism and the Lord's Supper Sacraments or Ordinances?- Is Baptism a Divine Means of Grace or a Human Act of Obedience?- What Is The Correct Term for [the Lord's Supper]?- What Is the Meaning of the Lord's Supper?- In What Sense Is Christ Present in the Lord's Supper? One last note, I began reading this book while waiting to have my tonsils removed and assumed during my recovery I would turn toward a more simple form of leisure. I returned to this book however. While Hammett is quite scholarly in his presentation, he's also very enjoyable to read.Rating: 5/5 (I loved it)Note: I received a physical copy of this book for free in exchange for an unbiased review.

It certainly covers two subjects that have been controversial and debated since the beginning of the church. I was interested in the subject since I am not of the same viewpoint as the authors. I must admit that I am not a Baptist, so my perception comes from an independent non-Baptist view. I did not come with the idea of being critical, but the idea of wanting to better understand their positions on these two great subjects. Overall the book seems fair, but also biased. The book does answer important questions about the subjects with clarity and is understandability. He does bring out good information on the basic denominational differences—except for those who doe not practice water baptism nor practice the Lord’s Supper, which their views are noticeably absent. While these views are relatively small in the world of Christianity, they deserved to be at least given some notice or mention. There is merit in the book on the subject of baptism. It gives good basic overall history of the subject of the doctrine and its development. For those who have questions on the subject will likely find it here: e.g. baptismal regeneration, infant baptism, and means of grace. However, I am disappointed mainly by what is not included on the subject of baptism. There is nothing on the types of baptism that do not include water (e.g. the baptism of fire). Likewise, the subject of spiritual baptism is only spoken of in relationship to water baptism. In my opinion the sections and questions on the Lord’s Supper is not much better than the ones of baptism. Like the subject of baptism, the author gives a fair view of the differences among Christians. He deals with the major issues. One will find areas that one agrees with and some he disagrees with. Like baptism he says we celebrate the Lord’s Supper because it is commanded. He does well on the meaning of the Lord’s Supper, but seems to favor a closed communion, and suggests that the movement to an open communion is due to downplaying of theological and biblical standards (p 272). He concludes with some practical suggestions on how to use the Lord’s Supper in worship. The book is organized well, and spurs thought by questions at the end of each chapter. It is readable, and not overly technical. It gives good overall information and will answer basic questions one may have on the subjects. It is not a strong book for a detailed study of the subjects. There are better books on the subjects.I received this book free from Kregel Publications for the purpose of reviewing it. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255.

And this: “In one Spirit we were all baptized into one body.” And this: “We who are many are one body, for we all partake of one bread” (1 Cor. 10:17). One baptism. One bread. One body, united by baptism and bread. Yet Christ’s one body today certainly does not share one understanding about either baptism or bread (the Lord’s Supper).John Hammett’s new book might not solve this problem, but it does provide admirably balanced and irenic guidance for thirty-eight of the questions that divide us. (Thirty-eight because some questions cover two chapters.)SUMMARY OF BOOK:Hammett’s book is well organized, with logically sequenced topics, discussion questions at the end of each chapter, a bibliography of related books, and a Scripture index. A curious reader could easily start with any question that interests them, find the relevant chapter, and jump in. There’s just enough repeated content to ease such reading (not too much) and occasional pointers to other relevant chapters for more detail. The chapter titles/questions Hammett discusses have been well summarized by other reviews on this site, so I'll proceed directly to...ASSESSMENT OF BOOK:Con:* In his discussion of the proper number of sacraments, Hammett seems to confuse two questions: (1) Do we have biblical basis for observing these rites? (2) Do we have biblical basis for calling these rites sacraments? It seems to me that he critiques the Catholics based on the second question, but defends the Protestants based on the first question. A better answer, I think, would be to acknowledge that (1) we have good biblical basis for observing many rites—including ones like marriage and anointing with oil that the Catholics include as sacraments, along with others such as giving a blessing before meals—but that (2) we have no clear biblical basis for designating any subset of them by a term such as sacrament or ordinance.* Hammett tends to focus on the “local body” at the expense of the one, universal “body of Christ.” The NT never speaks of a “local body” of believers. Paul uses body imagery to depict the oneness of all who belong to Christ, not the division of Christians into local congregations. It seems to me that Hammett does not grasp this clearly, and that this misunderstanding skews his thinking at several points in the book. For example, here he considers who may properly partake of the Lord’s Supper: "Should we approach the Lord’s Supper seeking to affirm, renew, and celebrate our unity with all Christians (the universal body of Christ) or with a church (a local body of believers)? ...Moreover, if we want to affirm Christian unity, we have to accept that at present we simply do not have it yet in terms of the meaning of the Lord’s Supper, so why not affirm our unity around the gospel, which is the proper boundary of Christian unity?" (p. 271). In addition to the "body problems," Hammett’s suggestion that the universal body of Christ unite around the gospel rather than sharing the Lord’s Supper together is curious given that elsewhere he emphasizes “the general agreement that the Lord’s Supper is meant to be a visual proclamation of the gospel” (p. 208).* Hammett fails to sufficiently consider what the NT says about wrongfully withholding the Lord’s Supper. To prevent someone from communing in the Lord’s Supper is, quite literally, excommunication. The NT reserves this action for false teachers, unrepentant sinners whose immoral actions disqualify them from claiming to be Christians, and (perhaps) Christians who are temporarily under discipline because they need to repent from immoral actions. Hammett effectively draws on the positive NT evidence about the meaning and purpose of the Lord’s Supper. But, like most authors I’ve read who wrestle with the question of who may commune, he does not sufficiently consider this negative evidence regarding the use and abuse of excommunication.None of the weaknesses of this book are so central as to detract from its general success.Pro:* Hammett doesn’t waste your time. Daniel L. Akin’s endorsement is right on target: “John Hammett has the wonderful gift to say more in fewer words than most any theologian I know” (back cover).* Hammett is admirably fair to other theological camps. Some Baptist books critiquing Catholics quote from other Baptists describing Catholic positions; Hammett repeatedly quotes the Catechism of the Catholic Church. He achieves his own goal well: "I am in the Baptist camp, both by heritage and conviction, and want to acknowledge the possibility of bias in my evaluations. Still, I will try to listen to the case made by others, critique them fairly, advocate the views that seem soundest to me, but leave the final evaluation to the reader" (p. 115).* Hammett includes a wide range of perspectives. While he clearly has favorite theologicans (Calvin and Beasley-Murray among them), he includes Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Reformed, Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, Pentecostal, and Methodist views on various topics. Each of these bring something useful to consider.* Hammett is able to laugh at and critique his own Baptist church tradition. For example: "They rarely speak with one voice on anything" (p. 201). Or this, quoting Millard Erickson: "In the past, in their zeal to deny the physical or bodily presence of Christ in the elements, some Baptists were accused of teaching ‘the real absence of Christ,’ the idea that ‘the one place where Jesus most assuredly is not to be found is the Lord’s Supper’" (p. 238).* Hammett is irenic (peaceable) and appropriately cautious in presenting his conclusions. He commonly uses "peacemaker words" such as "I think" or "it seems to me."CONCLUSION:I disagree with Hammett on a variety of points. But I still really like this book. It is an excellent resource to help us listen to each other across our theological divides, and should help careful readers find common ground in Christ.I give this book 4-1/2 out of 5 stars.-----------For a much longer version of this review (with a more evidence both pro and con), please search online for my name and the title of this book.
