Perhaps no book of the Bible better demonstrates the desire to understand God than Psalms. Accessible guide to the Psalms By Sheep23 Hymns of the Heart: Discovering God in the Psalms by Adam FaughnHave you ever needed a guide to reading the book of Psalms in the Old Testament? Has it ever occurred to you that focusing on certain psalms will help you in your study of the Bible? Adam Faughn helps his readers get in the heart of the psalms as he looks at 35 of them in his new book, Hymns of the Heart: Discovering God in the Psalms. The book is designed to open up the prayer and worship book of the OT and help us discern the meaning for today.Adam gets into each psalm by looking at the structure, theology, and message of each psalm for today. With an appreciation for the historical context of each psalm, Adam weaves together scholarship, story and application that helps the reader understand each psalm in its context. With most chapters being around 10 pages, you can easily pick up the book and learn more about each of the 35 included psalms. One thing I really thought was done well in this book was Adam’s insistence in drawing out the emotional tenor of each psalm and how it has affected his own spiritual life. The psalms are certainly meant to push us toward various emotions from anger to joyous celebration all the way praising the God who made us.If you want an accessible guide to some of the Psalter, Adam’s book will encourage your faith. Thanks to BookCrash and Start2Finish Books for the copy this book in exchange for an honest review.

Comfort from Psalms By Gardenergal Hymns of the Heart written by Adam Faughn is a comprehensive analysis of the most beautiful songs in the Bible - the Psalms.I have always connected easily the Psalms, finding it easy to identify with the struggles and joys contained within each. Their relevance to everyday situations is, for me, a source of comfort. One can pretty much guarantee finding many moments to relate to while reading God’s responses, or not – as the case might be. The Psalms are collections of real people and real situations. It is why Adam’s book will be a blessing to anyone wanting to better understand these beautiful songs.Reading Adam’s book I was somewhat overwhelmed by his long explanations, but his intrinsic love of these delightful poems is apparent.I am not an academic, whereas Adam clearly is. His book is packed full of accounts of those by-gone times and could have lost me among his long interpretations, but my love of the Psalms kept my attention as I choose to learn more about them. The book covers thirty-five of the Psalms, with conclusions at the close of each chapter. One of the questions raised is, “Are you close to God?” I asked myself that same question.Do I choose Him in destitute times; downcast times; disturbing or directionless times? No, not always. Do you?I found the book long, nevertheless absorbing. I have favorites among the Psalms and I found some of them within the pages of Adam’s book, otherwise I might have been tempted to stop reading – and that would have been my loss.Well written and I certainly recommend it to anyone wanting to expand their knowledge and understanding of what the Psalms are all about.I received a free copy of this book from publisher Bookcrash in exchange for an honest review.

Burnham If you are looking for a deeper look into the heart of God, then consider studying the Psalms with Adam Faughn’s Hymns of the Heart. A good start for an individual Bible study, this book is sure to make you go deeper in your relationship with God.Faughn explores 35 of the Psalms in detail — verse by verse — including commentary from Biblical scholars and analysis of the original meanings of words. Each chapter is less than 10 pages long, allowing for the reader to complete a study of each Psalm in a day or two. Faughn introduces each study with a story and then painstakingly works through the verses expounding on key words and phrases. While each section within the chapter looks at the complete verses, the book does not include the Psalms in their entirety. I wish that the book had included them at the beginning of each chapter, or if that was not possible, the verses included by themselves instead of within the text. This is certainly just a personal preference; I did have my Bible close by to use as a guide. The book also does not include questions for personal reflection — it reads more like a lecture than a discussion — so I think this one is more for individual than group study.Audience: adults.(Thanks to BookCrash for a review copy.
