We suffer when we screw up, but we suffer doubly when we conceal our screwing up from each other and from ourselves. As the good folks in AA say, "we are only as sick as our secrets."We all like to think of ourselves as 'good people,' but that's only half the story--and to tell only half the story is to live only half our lives. Standing Naked Before God is a book about telling the whole story--one amazing, vibrant progressive Christian church's countercultural practice of public confession of sin. Every week, millenials, Gen-Xers, Boomers and even young teens at First Church Somerville UCC, the church Baskette pastors in hipster Boston, take the stand to tell about a time they messed up, broke bad, or made Jesus want to cry. The book is part how-to, part devotional reading, part how-to, and part anthology of stories of personal loss, vulnerability, failure and redemption--stories to make you laugh and cry in equal measure. It's a book, in our tell-all culture, that is not about baring our souls to get more likes or pageviews: it's about putting our wounds into the service of others. Telling the stories of our sins in a sacred setting means learning to see how God has entered those stories, turning even our failures and flaws to goodness and grace. All we have to do is show up--and tell the truth. All of it.This is a book for spiritual seekers of any stripe who love true stories, and who might be aching for a spiritual practice that will move them toward a wholehearted, vulnerable and fully integrated life.

Standing Naked Before God: The Art of Public Confession, by Molly Phinney Baskette

Review "Is confession good for the soul? The answer is yes, as Baskette shows in this lively, moving report from the trenches of a parish church. She gives a sense of how worship can change lives and how individual confession can become a powerful corporate blessing." ~Peter Hawkins, Professor of Religion and Literature, Yale Divinity School"When the pastor of a church that almost died in the ambulance--but then danced out of the ER surrounded by drag queens, young adults and a marching band--tells you there's one thing they did that made all the difference, you probably should listen. With wit and a solid grounding in theology and psychology, Baskette tutors us in the ancient ways of confession and assurance, and gives examples of her congregation's God-talk that will break your heart, stitch it back together, and make you long to stand up and confess." ~Quinn Caldwell,  All I Really Want: Readings for a Modern Christmas"A brave, bold and biting book. Don't crack it open unless you are ready to be cracked open yourself. Much more than a scolding call to confession, this book is a love-soaked invitation to tell the truth in the pews." ~Lillian Daniel, author of When Spiritual But Not Religious is Not EnoughIn the age of social meda we have grown accustomed, even inured, to a culture where people are more exposed, if not more vulnerable and real. This has created an expectation that no community can be authentic without a level of genuine honesty and vulnerability. Too often, the church is the last place that can be found. Baskette offers us a new/ancient way for the church to become the type of community that our culture seeks and needs. ~Michael S. Piazza, Agile Church ConsultingBecause Baskette sees the Christian life as a heroic undertaking rather than a weekend hobby, she expects her church members to do hard things, like stand in front of their friends and neighbors and trust them with their truest stories, revealing their most authentic, wounded selves. Call it what you will, this practice inspires the kind of holy intimacy that binds people together, transforming them from a congregation of fellow travelers into a living, breathing body of Christ. That makes this book good news.~Shawnthea Monroe, The Christian Century

About the Author Molly Phinney Baskette is, in no particular order, a mother, spouse, recovering workaholic, cancer survivor, adventurous home cook. And oh right: she's also the lead pastor of the quirky, loveable, burgeoning community of First Church Somerville UCC in Somerville, MA, recently dubbed the hippest city in America. She blogs about ministry, motherhood, cancer and whatever else can't fit into her Sunday sermons at revmolly.tumblr.com. Her new blog, realgoodchurch.tumblr.com, spells out just how her church pulled out of the financial and numerical nosedive that has sent many other mainline Christian churches into a death spiral. And, when time permits, she has fun making sense of the big theological questions little kids ask at whatisgodfor.tumblr.com.

Helpful for church life in the 21st century, and personal devotional reading. Half of the book is individual confessions. These personal stories are most helpful when one takes the time to ponder the current story before reading the next.

In a postmodern (post-denominational and post-Christian?) world, we are learning that we can no longer "play church" in the sense of just opening our doors, offering a warm smile, so that people can have a place to escape from their Monday-Saturday lives with a little spiritual respite. People today are looking for authentic community. Baskette shows us that the best way to build community is by allowing people a safe space to bare their souls before God and one another. This book is a portrayal of authentic community/church. It is a "witness" to what the church could look like in every setting. Molly is a clear writer precisely because she opens herself up to her reading audience as well. Don't miss her own confessions in the pages of this book! This is a "how to" book in a sense that isn't at all trite. This book is seriously transformational for individuals and communities.

By Adam I This is a book for people with a genuine love for being the church, telling the truth, and doing both at the same time. This book not only gives situational context and theological grounding for a personal liturgical expression of confession, it also provides the how-to and examples. For most churches, the mode of public confession promoted by the book will be not only novel but scary. The comfortable mode of doing church is, well, comfortable. I, for one, can't wait to try out the techniques offered here. Kudos to First Church Somerville for being brave.

In this new book J. Matthew Pinson presents a collection of historical-theological essays from the vantage point of a variety of Arminianism coming to be known as Reformed Arminianism. These essays describe the contours of the theology of the seventeenth-century English General Baptists Thomas Helwys and Thomas Grantham, showing their kinship with the thought of Jacobus Arminius, and the ways they diverged from thinkers such as John Smyth, John Goodwin, and John Wesley. Unlike these latter thinkers, Helwys and Grantham emphasized more-Reformed understandings of the meaning of sin and salvation. This is seen most clearly in their doctrines of total depravity, penal substitutionary atonement, the imputation of the active and passive obedience of Christ, and progressive sanctification. These doctrines produced a way of looking at perseverance and apostasy that emphasizes perseverance through faith alone rather than remaining in a state of grace through works and penitence.

Arminian and Baptist, by J. Matthew Pinson

Review . . . a compelling account of an Arminianism that is at once Reformed, classical, and evangelical. Some Calvinists will find here a set of first cousins they never knew they had, and some Arminians will discover a sturdier faith that comes within "the hair's breadth" of difference Mr. Wesley talked about. --Timothy George, founding dean, Beeson Divinity School of Samford UniversityI highly recommend this book. . . . Most Arminians will encounter some surprises here. I also recommend it to Calvinists. Our first obligation to those with whom we disagree is to find out what they are actually saying. If this happens, Arminianism will be given a new face in the theological world. --F. Leroy Forlines, Professor Emeritus and former Dean of Students, Welch College I thank God for the resurgence of grace-oriented, gospel-focused Arminianism represented in this book. This is an Arminianism with a deep sense of radical human depravity, the sovereign initiative of God, penal substitutionary atonement, and the imputation of the active and passive obedience of Christ to the believer. We may sometimes disagree on the 'how' and the 'when' of salvation, but we agree on the 'what' and the 'Who.' --Russell Moore, President, Southern Baptist Ethics and Religious Liberty CommissionI enthusiastically recommend this book. These essays will answer the reader's questions about the Arminianism that is part of the tradition of those of us whose heritage lies in the English General Baptists of the seventeenth century. Kudos to Pinson and to Randall House for bringing them to us in this format. --Robert E. Picirilli, Professor Emeritus and former Academic Dean, Welch CollegeWhat a breath of fresh air Matt Pinson brings to me. While being enriched by and appreciative of the heritage of Reformed theologians, I could never buy into the thoroughgoing Calinistic paradigm. Pinson has shown that it is possible to harness the rich heritage of Reformed theology without jettisoning a balanced and biblically grounded Arminianism. --Ajith Fernando, Teaching Director and former President, Youth for Christ, Sri Lanka

This common error among Calvinists and others stems from a refusal to interact with Arminius’ actual writings. Dr. J. Matthew Pinson provides readers with a healthy corrective to the mainstream understanding of Arminius’ theology in Arminian and Baptist: Explorations in a Theological Tradition.Dr. Pinson serves Welch College’s fifth president (2002-present). After attending Welch College in the 1980s, he graduated from the University of West Florida (B.A. in humanities, M.A. in history), Yale (M.A.R.), and Vanderbilt (Ed.D.). He has authored and edited numerous books including Perspectives on Christian Worship (B&H), Four Views on Eternal Security (Zondervan),, and A Free Will Baptist Handbook (Randall House).SummaryArminian and Baptist: Explorations in a Theological Tradition is a healthy blend of history and theology within the Arminian Baptist tradition. Readers will be surprised to find that one can be Arminian, Baptist, and confessional at the same time. Some Arminians are afraid to speak of their theological persuasions because of what others associate with the term Arminian. Error exists when people view Arminians as Pelagians or at least semi-Pelagians. This book serves as a healthy corrective by encouraging readers to engage with the writings of Arminius himself. Within the pages of this book readers will revisit Reformational affirmations, such as sola scriptura, sola fide, and sola gratia. Such doctrinal imperatives must be preached for the church to defend heresy properly and foster spiritual vitality in the contemporary church.Chapter 1: “Jacobus Arminius: Reformed and Always Reforming”: Many might be surprised to find that Jacobus Arminius had a Reformed understanding of original sin and total depravity. His main divergence concerned predestination, something for which Arminius’ followers are known. Pinson labors to show his reader than Arminius viewed himself as a development of Reformed theology and not a radical departure from it. Arminius adhered to the Heidelberg Catechism and the Belgic Confession. One does not treat Arminius justly if they only view his theology through his followers. Pinson urges readers to revisit Arminius himself rather than some Wesleyan or Pelagian interpretation of Arminius.Chapter 2: “The Nature of the Atonement in the Theology of Jacobus Arminius”: Various elements of Arminius’ theology receive frequent attention, but his views on the atonement are discussed less frequently. Arminius adhered closely to the views of the Reformation in the 17th century. Arminius’ views on the atonement of Christ were based largely on his understanding of Christ’s three-fold office of Prophet, Priest, and King. Arminius adhered to a Reformational penal substitutionary atonement for the believer based on Christ’s active and passive obedience. Pinson’s summary is helpful: “God satisfies His love for the creature by forgiving sins, while at the same time satisfying His love for justice by inflicting the punishment for sin (‘inflicting stripes’) on His son.” For Arminius, the atonement is necessary because God’s demand for holiness must be met, and it is met solely in the person and work of Christ.Chapter 3: “Sin and Redemption in the Theology of John Smyth and Thomas Helwys”: John Smyth and Thomas Helwys were both forebears of the modern Baptist movement, but eventually they would diverge in their soteriology and ecclesiology. Helwys strikingly adhered to similar views of Arminius. Pinson provides an historical sketch of Smyth and Helwys, with careful attention given to the theological distinctives later held by each. Some of the key doctrines held in tension by Smyth and Helwys were original sin, depravity, human ability, free will, and justification.Pinson concludes that Arminius had a direct influence on Helwys, who came to have anti-Calvinistic persuasions similar to Smyth, but diverged theologically. Helwys was far closer to Arminius’ thinking than was Smyth. This chapter is helpful because of Helwys’ contribution to present-day Reformed Arminians. A careful reading of this chapter better informs the reader about sin and redemption in Arminius as mediated through Thomas Helwys.Chapter 4: “The First Baptist Treatise on Predestination: Thomas Helwys’ Short and Plaine Proofe”: To a fault Thomas Helwys is often overshadowed by his mentor, John Smyth. Helwys is responsible for establishing the first Baptist church on English soil. Helwys authored A Short and Plaine Proofe to explain why he separated from Smyth. Smyth’s doctrines on original sin, the imputation of Christ’s righteousness, and his acceptance of Hoffmanite Christology stand in opposition to Helwys, who accepted the positions of the Magisterial Reformers. Along with these issues, the chapter discusses determinism, the free will of Adam, divine reprobation, and infant salvation. Helwys’ Arminianism stands in stark contrast with Pelagians’ and Waterlander Mennonites’. It’s more grace-oriented, emphasizing salvation by grace through faith. Helwys is a “vital resource for understanding Arminian and Baptist approaches to soteriology.” Readers will be compelled to appreciate the Arminianism advocated by Thomas Helwys.Chapter 5: “Thomas Grantham and the Diversity of Arminian Soteriology”: Reformed Arminian soteriology is further developed by Thomas Grantham. Grantham is the foremost English General Baptist of the latter half of the 17th century and is the quintessential representative of Arminian soteriology. Pinson diligently labors to demonstrate this, albeit with some qualifications. Grantham provides us with a unique middle ground between orthodox Calvinism and what has become known as Arminianism. He is considered an Arminian because his views on election, atonement, the resistibility of grace, and the perseverance of the saints is much closer to Arminius’ views than Calvin’s.Another prominent theologian of the late 17th century was John Goodwin, who was known as an Arminian, but departed much further from Calvinistic thinking than did Grantham. In short, Goodwin and Grantham were distinct in their understandings of sin and the nature of divine justice. Goodwin had been influenced by Hugo Grotius’ governmental view of atonement, whereas Grantham adhered to the penal satisfaction view promoted through the Reformers before him. Grantham believed he was advocating a via media position between Calvinism and some form of Pelagianism. He believed this was the “way of the Bible and of the primitive churches.”Chapter 6: “Atonement, Justification, and Apostasy in the Theology of John Wesley”: Pinson’s purpose in writing this chapter is to show that Wesley’s views cannot be nicely lumped into any theological category. Although he was influenced by Anglican Arminianism, Calvinistic Arminianism, and Catholic Arminianism, none of these positions can safely claim Wesley as one of their own. Wesley viewed Christ’s atonement as sufficient for past sins, but not future sins. This led to his understanding of justification and apostasy. Wesley believed in two types of apostasy, which I found interesting. He believed in final apostasy and what came to be known as backsliding. Pinson distinguishes Reformed Arminianism from Wesleyan Arminianism, and urges readers to view Reformed Arminianism in a more positive light, given its connection to Arminius thought.Chapter 7: “Confessional, Baptist, and Arminian: The General-Free Will Baptist Tradition and the Nicene Faith”: This chapter is worth the purchase cost. Pinson moves Arminian Baptist readers to consider the importance of their confessional history. Some have contended that the only creed to follow is Scripture itself, but readers will be surprised to find that one of the early General Baptist leaders, Thomas Grantham, was confessional. One can be confessional, Baptist, and Arminian at the same time. If we continue the tradition of defending the church against heresy, we must revisit the church’s creeds and confession. There is no greater breath of fresh air for Free Will Baptists than Pinson’s words at this chapter’s close:The task at hand for contemporary Arminian Baptists is to re-connect with their past: their own scripturally permeated tradition, the tradition of the Reformation, and the Reformation’s rooting of itself in and appropriation of the consensual orthodoxy of the creeds, councils, and fathers of the early church.Strengths and ChallengesArminian and Baptist can read from cover to cover, or in parts. The book is a collection of previously written and/or published essays, making it more user-friendly. Readers will appreciate Pinson’s careful approach to understanding Reformed Arminianism for what it is: a development of the Reformation, not a departure from it. This book highlights Arminius’ views and traces how the early English Baptists upheld those views. Arminian and Baptist balances the history and theology behind the movement known as Reformed Arminianism. Each chapter is followed by a brief conclusion, enabling readers to grasp more fully what is being said.Readers are encouraged to be aware of theological jargon, most notably in chapter three. Thomas Helwys and John Smyth discussed sin and redemption and used terms such as creationist, traducionist, visible church, natural headship, and so on. Also, I would have liked a chapter on what Free Will Baptists can do in their ministries to carry on this great tradition of faith that has been handed down to us.RecommendationI recommend this book to future pastors, lay leaders, and students. College students can appreciate this work as a treasure trove of Arminian Baptist thought because so little has been published previously. If we are to engage seriously in defending the church against modern day heresies, we must revisit our past, or as Pinson puts it: renewal through retrieval.

Miracle On average, whenever someone of the Reformed Theological persuasion would be asked what their view of Arminianism is, they usually give a very negative opinion. They would liken Arminian doctrine to Pelagianism, or at least, Semi-Pelagianism. If they are probed further they would have to admit that they have arrived at their conclusions on the basis of what others have said about Arminianism, but they themselves have never personally read anything of what Arminius actually taught from his own words. In his new book “Arminian And Baptist” Dr. J. Matthew Pinson skillfully writes as a passionate defense attorney giving undeniable proof that Jacobus Arminius was not some renegade, cracked-pot theologian, but instead he was a very scholarly, Bible centered, and doctrinally sound Reformed thinker.Dr. Pinson displays for the reader that, Reformed Arminianism stands out from all other brands of Arminianism, by exhibiting how Arminius strongly held to the traditional Reformed ideas of radical depravity involved in original sin, the penal satisfaction view of the atonement, perseverance through faith alone, among other cardinal doctrines of the Reformation.Pinson further forthrightly points out other similarities of Reformed Arminianism with traditional Reformed views, as well as the obvious differences of these two branches of Reformation theology. One of the geniuses of this book is that Dr. Pinson explores how Arminius’ contemporaries viewed him and his theological persuasions. The reader may unexpectedly discover that many, of what we would consider strong Calvinists of that day, did not consider the man, nor his teachings, to be heretical as so many contemporary Calvinists do today.Another very helpful aspect of this book is that the author also looks at how Reformed Arminianism has developed from the time of Arminius, throughout church history, even right up to present-day Reformed Arminians. The unbiased reader will be tremendously enlightened, informed, and maybe even shockingly surprised at the strong, Biblically sound, and orthodox views of both the theologian Arminius and his followers. I highly commend Dr. Pinson on writing this tremendous book that I pray will revolutionize the evangelical world’s view of Reformed Arminianism.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves theology By zachary white This book is the first book I have read about Arminian theology. I have long been of the persuasion that Arminian theology was in error and should not be considered but I have recently been curious about the arguments for Arminianism. This book really helps to correct a lot of misconceptions about Arminianism. Many of the misconceptions have been due to attributing later Arminian theology to Arminius himself. In Arminian and Baptist we are given a historical look at the real Arminius and what he himself actually taught. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves theology, history, or just a good read.

Present: How one woman pulled the plug on distraction to connect with Real Life., by Keri Mae Lamar

Review "Keri Mae's confessions of trying to stay present and attentive, grateful and hope-filled, are lively, witty, and just plain fun. She helpfully diagnoses pressing and distracting temptations of our day and spells out her humble experiments in living life more abundantly. She inspires my resolve to choose the good life." --Arthur Boers, pastor and award-winning author of six books, including, Living Into Focus: Choosing What Matters in an Age of Distractions; Associate Professor and R. J. Bernardo Family Chair of Leadership at Tyndale Seminary. "Keri's story is refreshing as she gives a candid and vulnerable account of her journey from a life of digital comatose to an awakening and rediscovery of the deep satisfaction of being present with the people around you. She blows the lid off a lonely craze that fosters vicarious living and superficial connections that are a mile wide and laptop deep. This book is not just for blogging moms but anyone who might have lost sight of what is truly important in relationships with family, and community, and with God."--Phillip Telfer, pastor and producer of Captivated; president of Media Talk 101"...Keri candidly relates her painful and humbling experience being tangled in the web of the online world and the surprising, unquenchable desire for media presence. Her story is at once revealing and instructive--the resulting fruit of her trials highlight the value and importance of being undistracted, available, and deeply Present here and now. This book may help you identify the source and spotlight where you've gotten derailed in your life and relationships and will offer you the encouragement and tools you need to be Present."--Pamela Spurling, blogger; The Welcome Home"...a gift of beauty and grace...Her elegant passages and gentle voice had me leaning in with a quiet spirit and soul so that I could listen closely, glean wisdom, and be refreshed. Reading Present was almost like having a conversation with Lamar over tea...and as I evaluated my own habits her words never made me feel scolded or put down. She didn't finger point but instead left me feeling reflective and nurtured while making decisions on how I can be more present in my own life. A beautiful book."--Elizabeth Byler Younts, author; The Promise of Sunrise Series."Keri's raw honesty and poignant portrayal of her own journey to a simpler, more purposeful life in a technology- driven society is riveting. Few books have moved me as much to ponder what life really is and how I'm living it. She challenges me to reject falling for the pseudo-reality on my screen and make room to embrace real life more completely, ultimately transforming my relationships and myself. The health of our generation depends on taking seriously the admonition Keri offers in a non-condemning, powerfully- beautiful style."--Kelly Crawford, blogger; Generation Cedar

By Sara I have the wonderful privilege of knowing Keri and receiving a book to review for free. I love how poignant and candid she is telling of her struggles with the internet and learned how she needed to become more "PRESENT" with the people around her. I couldn't help but think that the Lord used Keri to get my attention with my own "addiction" to go into a world of no reality. To ignore all that is/was around me and drown out the very thing I was supposed to be giving my attention to. Keri has a gift of bringing to light questions that I believe everyone should be asking of their own in regards to how they spend time in our technological world now. I, myself, have been convicted of how much time I spend just on one particular social media sight. I try and justify my time telling me I am catching up with friends/family when in reality I want to escape some of my days activities. After reading Present, I have made it a point to connect with people via phone as opposed to social media as much as I can. There is something after all, about a phone where you can still hear a person's sigh, or even know they are smiling, as opposed to typing those famous letters LOL. Years ago we were of a people that went and sought each other out for company, face to face. Now we are just a cyber space second away from connecting with a person and yet I truly believe it can be so much more. I am very grateful to Keri and how the Lord showed her through her own experience and that she is able to show others, like me, just how controlling we can let social media be in our lives if we do not learn to control it. Sometimes it does take "unplugging" to come back to reality and to be "PRESENT".

There's nothing groundbreaking in the book, I feel like it's something we all know. But it is the author's personal story and well written. I agree that we are too dependent on social media etc. I'm not on any of the big sites, I miss out on a lot of "news". I've resorted to the fact that the people I felt close to before things like FB, are really not close friends at all. They all communicate by FB now, not even e-mail. I heard on a radio program once that we are "creating friendships a million miles wide and 2 inches deep". I thought that was VERY true of what's happening. I think WONDERFUL things can come of social media and online communities. But I do believe that many real life relationships are either neglected or abandoned in the meantime. I really resonate with the author's feelings of not wanting her children to see the back of her head all the time. I don't want my kids to see a "device/phone" in my hands at all times. I really do appreciate the reminder from Keri Mae's experience.

A Profound Gift for Readers By Isabel Gates “They were opportunities to ignore the mess under my own feet.” The call of the blog universe and the escapism of the online world, were powerful draws to author Keri Lamar, who was craving a more meaningful life. “Logically, I knew this wasn’t peace. It was deadening. And playing dead is not the same as walking in peace.” In Present, Keri does a masterful job at explaining and justifying the pulls she felt as a homeschooling mother of eight toward the blogging life, while wrestling with the deep loneliness she felt at times when the distraction of social media gradually began to take hold. On a heart level, she knew where the damage was originating. She lamented that she was not fully present in body, mind, and spirit for those she loved. A book of enlightening revelations and heart filled stories of the journey, I found I couldn’t put Present down. Ironically, once I finished the book, I wanted to keep reading. I bookmarked her blog, (http://www.ahappyhomemedia.com) where she occasionally posts, both for the joy of writing and for the gift she wants to give us as readers. I deeply appreciate the balance she's found. “Sharing, as it turned out, was not sharing, was never a trade of any kind. Blogging, tweeting, any writing at all, was giving. Gifting. That revelation changed my thinking.” Our online world is difficult at the best of times to navigate from the perspective of the human spirit. Keri’s journey in this book IS a gift. Her keen ability to step back and observe the results of her life choices with her deeply engaging writing style has a poignant meaning for us all.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. All three Tricks of the Trade books are valuable resources By Sally Bend Even More Tricks of the Trade is the latest volume of Carollyn Faith Olson’s wonderful non-fiction series. Having taken us from the beginner’s stage in the first book, to issues of comfort and presentation in the second, she takes a broader approach here, offering a little something for everyone, regardless of where they are in their gender journey. What is interesting about this third volume is that it opens with some rather philosophical thoughts on what it means to be a cross dresser. While I am not sure I agree with everything written here, the questions are well worth asking. In Part One, Kathy Hamilton contributes a lovely piece on Cross Dressing in Public for The First Time that should be required reading; Carollyn’s piece on the Things Every Cross Dresser Needs To Emulate a Woman starts out simple, but is actually quite exhaustive; and Deedra Kay and Jamie Anne May offer some valuable observations on hair removal. In Part Two, Lucille Sorella and Kathy Hamilton help highlight the struggles we have with hair (and how to make it work for us), while Emily Kate Warren, David Borrows, and Didi Gluck tackle the subject of lips and lipstick from a few different angles. Part Three is all about legs and shoes, with some great pieces on how to buy, wear, and walk like a girl, while Part Four gets into clothes with some my favorite pieces coming from Cynthia Nellis (Fashion Solutions For Your Body Type) and David Borrows (Common Corset Issues and How To Solve Them).Of course, confidence, cosmetics, and clothes can only take you so far, so Part Five gets back to the issues of comfort and presentation from the second book, exploring how to best feel and look feminine. Not surprisingly, Lucille Sorella has some of the best pieces here, advising us how to look shorter, adjust out body movements, pitch our voices, and disguise the giveaway of an Adam’s apple. Part Six is kind of a collection of pieces that did not fit anywhere else, but Kathy Hamilton and Heidi Phox have some really useful things to say about gaffs and tucking, while Stephanie Shosta offers some advice on those social media posts we all regret. While none of them are likely books you will sit and read cover-to-cover, all three Tricks of the Trade books are valuable resources to have available when you need some advice or have a question about something in particular.

Chapter 1 of the book is written by Donna Kelli. Donna Kelli is an attractive crossdresser. Here is some of the interesting information this book mentions: For a woman appear masculine, it is more a matter of lack of effort to look feminine. A woman’s priorities or finances may not allow for the luxury of femininity. However, for a man to look feminine, it takes a great deal of effort and money. Pre-painted, pre-glued, press-on nails usually go on in less than five minutes. Tights are very handy when there is no time to shave the legs. Men tend to walk with shoulder swagger while women sway their hips when walking. Men walk with longer strides than women do. Opaque support pantyhose block out hair. Heels give an immediate feminine air and grace when worn correctly. Male voices typically range from 100-150 HZ while female voices typically range from 175-250 HZ. There is a chapter in this book on how to use Facebook wisely. There is a Glossary at the ending portion of the book.

A Wonderful Way to End the Night By SoozeSays I have been using the "Bedtime Devotions with Jesus: My Daily Devotional for Kids" with my two grandsons, ages 4 and 6. There is a one page devotional for each day of the year and they are grouped by weeks. The illustrations are simple but appealing. The devotions are written by multiple authors and are on various themes. You could start at the beginning and read in order or read by theme. There is even a ribbon bookmark to mark your place; a very nice touch. These are not rambling discourses, there is a theme, a short Bible verse, one paragraph illustrating the theme, a one line prayer to Jesus and a brief reinforcement of the the theme. All in all, very well done and the perfect length for a young child. I would definitely recommend this devotional book to parents and grandparents.

It has a devotion for each day of the year and even comes with a bookmark built in to easily keep up with your reading By Amanda B Bedtime Devotions with Jesus (My Daily Devotional for Kids) is for young elementary age children. It has a devotion for each day of the year and even comes with a bookmark built in to easily keep up with your reading. The devotions have so many topics for young children including but not limited to salvation, forgiveness, praying, family, obedience, and sin. This book is designed to read every night with your young child. It is set up in weeks instead of actual dates so you can start at anytime of year. I choose to review this book because I have young children ages ten, eight and two. This book is probably a little to young for my 10 year old. But is great for my eight year old and two year old. I love the cover and the illustrations of the bears in the book. The little bears are really cute and simplistic. The devotions are well made. I have not read them all but the ones we have read are very good and simple. I like all the topics I have read so far and I feel like they can help a young child in their daily walk with the Lord. My only complaint is that they put a Bible verse with every devotion and they used verses from the International Children's Bible. My family reads from the King James Version and therefore reading a verse to my children that is not what they normally learn in Church or their own Bible Studies can make it confusing. So I just prefer to read my own Bible with the devotion.

There is nothing wrong with it, it has cute illustrations, everything is easy to understand, and helpful for starting conversations. But the age range listed is 4-8years old - I have a 2, 4, and 7 year old and I can tell you right now that after only a few days of reading this, most of the contents of this book is old news to my 7 and 4 year olds. They have heard all of this simplistic stuff before and want to hear ACTUAL Bible stories, and read things that are longer than one short paragraph. Of course, it's over the head of my two year old, so I may save it and do it with her in another year when she is three. But my 4 and 7 year olds require a little more substance in their devotions. My 7 year old does some on his own, since he can read, but I still need to find something for the four year old that will help her grow. This book isn't it.

After reading Gospel of Sri Ramakarishna, if one wants to know more about this pure soul, then this is the book with many details and events.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. For anyone who wanted to know the teachings of the saint By monica While the biography of Sri Ramakrishna has received a lot of publicity, and is wonderful reading for an initial understanding of the bhakti saint, it is written as a diary and to that extent sometimes leaves the reader a little unsure of the motivation or significance of the sometimes enigmatic saint. This book interprets events and actions through the eyes of the direct disciple of Sri Ramakrishna. Seemingly small actions and even miraculous events are linked and/or interpreted according to the scriptures for the reader who has no Vedic background. Thereby leaving the sense of awe that would otherwise have been missing if one had read merely an account of the event. But the best part of this book is that the learning behind each experience has been clearly elucidated, and it is this that transforms the book form another biography into a religious text on bhakti. This book shows a bhakta practising the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita continuously throughout his life. The book is long but the Kindle version at least is organized into short chapters and sections, for the most part in chronological order, that allow the reader to go directly to the section of interest. For any practitioners of bhakti or meditation who may have had watered down experiences similar to the Paramhansa, they will be able to relate to the depth of devotion in this man. And surely they will find his interpretation of those experiences that directly relate them to the Vedanta very valuable. While M's biography was objective in keeping with it's style of a journal, it is clear from Swami Saradananda's overflowing emotion that he too must have been of the bhakta temperament.I strongly recommend this book to bhaktas...I have no doubt they will be transported "upward" by the sheer force of love for Devi that possessed Sri Ramakrishna. But I also think that one of a gnani temperament could better understand a mad devotion without dismissing it as easily as the great Swami Vivekananda once did.
